They talked about that on a local radio show with Michael Thompson and a few others, he said the bench press doesnt mean shit.

Leg/core strength is what counts when you are boxing out/fighting for a rebound. That and quickness, awareness, aggressiveness, length, leaping ability. Chest/tricep strength isnt a factor in the game of basketball.

Why would bench matter in the NBA? I can see if leg press was bad perhaps but bench?

well i mostly agree dj but upper body strength does matter for stamina(because your whole body matters for that). a lot of weak-framed guys play less minutes.
that being said, durant is obviously capable of filling out so it's a non-issue. i still think he's the next tim thomas.

Yea he should get stronger easily with the top trainers in the NBA. When I played I never worked on upper body strength much at all mostly just legs or lower body.

Its leg strength that allows you to keep position. That and just size. The bigger you are, the harder you are to move.

That's like saying it helps to be in good overall condition. Obviously. But in basketball, bench pressing someone out of the way will only result in a foul... so, being able to bench a lot wont help you.

i just don't think it's a "useless" measure, that's all but yea basically conditioning.
but i mean, i completely agree with you on the actual basketball skills... they don't factor into bench press at all.

The bigger you are, the harder you are to move. The bigger you are there is more of a likelihood that you have more chest strength then that of another person.

I wonder how much Reggie Miller or Rip Hamilton can bench? and I'd be shocked if anyone knew how much Earl Boykins can bench, you'd all be really surprised by the answer.
