Team strengths:
- Great contact hitters
- Great doubles hitters
- Great starting piching
- Good bullpen
- Good defense
- Decent speed
In contrast to last season, the team takes a lot of losses in their line-up, however it is still one of the better hitting teams on paper. On base percentage will be key.
The most important part of this team is the front line of the starting rotation with Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe and Jarrod Washburn. They carry the team wherever it goes, last year they led them all the way.
Team weaknesses:
- No bullpen depth, bridge from SP to SU is poor
- Too many station to station players
- Lack of OF range
- Poor hitting depth
The main problem will likely be the outfield range. Last season Johnny Damon was benched for the entire post-season in favor of a 23 year old minor leaguer because he had lost a step. It's considered a major liability to this organization.
Franchise Player:
Pedro Martinez/Manny Ramirez
Pedro is the greatest. Ramirez, is Ramirez. Both elite players, and both solidify the team.
Trade Block:
Boston has been looking to deal Damon and other high salary players in order to build the franchise in a more ideal way and have a better long term plan.
Season Outlook:
After last season's World Series title, the expectations are going to be very high. The reality however, is that New York has the most talented team in the division and the other teams will bring more competition than the previous season. Look for more slumps than last year and possibly a struggle to reach 90 wins.
