Team strengths: - Great contact hitters - Great doubles hitters - Great bullpen - Good starting pitching - Good defense - Decent speed
Hitting is the team's biggest strength. From 1 to 9 the Sox are filled with players that can hurt you - a rarity in baseball today.
Team weaknesses: - Weak starting pitching depth - Some players are liabilities on the bases - Some players are liabilities in the field
The biggest question for this team will be whether their back-end starters will be any good. At least half of Arroyo, Burkett, Mendoza, Lyon will have to be productive.
Franchise Player: Pedro Martinez/Manny Ramirez
Both are elite at what they do. Ramirez is an rbi machine, and Martinez - though declining - is as dominant as there is on the mound.
Trade Block: The team is in the market for another good starter. Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, Todd Walker and Trot Nixon have all been in rumors lately. The front office would also like a better defensive team overall.
Season Outlook: It's no secret that Boston fans are desperate for a World Series title. This team has a good chance, but in a world where pitching wins playoff games, there's always reason to worry. The Red Sox will have an excellent batting team, and their bullpen is enough to shut down anyone. Can the starters take care of business though? Much relies on the arms of Derek Lowe and Tim Wakefield, perhaps too much.
