Pretty sure each player gets 2 minimum salary years, and 3 arbitration years. Essentially any player will be with your team for 5 years automatically. In the 6th year the player will be a free agent.

And the value of the contract is bascially decided by the game based on how that player has performed...I'm really not looking forward to Albert's arby contract....ugh.

but how does it work exactly.
Does that mean if Furcal is eligible for Arbitration i'm going to re-sign him no matter what?

You can always release a player if you dont wish to pay the arbitration amount. But you need to make sure you release the player in the year prior to his next arby contract.

So then why does Furcal want to test the Free Agent market and when I offer him money he says it's not enough if he has to re-sign via Arbitration?

ah okay but does the player eligible for arbitration only re-sign after the season? Meaning it's pointless to open contract negotiations for a player eligible for arbitration?

It's not really pointless, but you're for sure going to get him back for at least 1 more year.

You can always try to sign a player to a different contract. Its better in most cases to try and sign a guy before the free agency year, just because its possible hell refuse to talk and youll lose him.

This is also the risk you run when you bring up a player early permanently.
Simply put, if your player's first 5 years of auto re-signs and arbitration run out and he is 27 years old or younger even, it's a big contract waiting to happen. Sometimes younger isn't always better. Just something to keep in mind. I still say "screw it", if they can play, bring em up.
