Times are changing in BBS as we've seen such league sanctions as the contract year, in season max rule, and the hard cap reshape the way teams are built in the modern era of BBS. The first of the three rules implemented was the hard cap which has made building a dynasty much harder to do and if done even harder to maintain. We've seen these so called dynasty teams crumble as their star players contracts each increased each and ever year and their key role players or rookie contracts were ready to cash in. Someone was sacrificed whether it was the star max player or the rookies or in some cases both. Recently we saw the Knicks struggle to maintain their identity and the hard cap nearly forced their hand in dealing the best up and coming player in the league, Kevin Durant.
The new in season max rule has also changed the way teams build their contending teams as they must play chess and not checkers looking 3 sometimes 4 years ahead to make sure this is really what they want to do. For instance if DJ were to have maxed Diaz in season Greg Oden or Kevin Durant would be on the free agent market or perhaps DJ wouldn't have even traded for Durant and he would be a Knick or somewhere else even.
The Contract year is the wild card in this system as we've seen teams really start defining their goals as a franchise much more concisely since this sanctions conception. We know when a team blows it up they have 4 years to get back to being competitive which makes them do what they have to do in order to build a winning franchise. We rarely see teams settling in mediocrity for a long period of time.
We saw the prime example of how things can turn around with these sanctions put in place with the emergence of the Seattle Supersonics when they went from being worst to first in 1 season only to win back to back championships. Free agency is now a formable way of rebuilding because teams are more cautious in spending or are they?
Teams nearing the hard cap are forced not to be able to resign guys like we saw with the LA Lakers losing out on swing man Danny Granger because of his hard cap woes he was approaching. The Lakers could have had one of the best teams ever in the BBS modern era if the hard cap wasn't place and if the new in season max rule wasn't in place. Instead the Sonics knew Granger would be theirs with few teams having the amount of resources financially as him as well as the fact the Lakers were forced to pick between Granger or Wiliams and we know how history played out.
It wasn't a choice for Pig to calculate his spending in free agency but rather toss money lavishly around. On the other hand Hernando had to offer contracts cautiously and meticulously in order to avoid the penalty.
This season may be the best free agent crop in the modern era as well as teams having a great deal of money to spend. This could make or break many teams futures with how they deal with spending their money. Sure they have enough to throw around 1,2, and maybe even 3 max deals but should they? Do you know how much a max counts towards your cap? Almost a quarter, 1/4, 25% and that is in year one. In year 4 that figure goes up to almost a third, 1/3, 33% of your cap. This player should be pretty special if he is receiving the max because if he isn't he could ruin your chances. Take a look at what Nened Krstic or Nene Hilario did to their franchises. Or Shaun Livingston, Kyle Lowry, Smush Parker. None of these guys have been on great teams because they can't be. They can't be accountable for 25-35% of the team's salary and be a winner. Lets not figure in cap space anymore but over the cap limit. Usually a team with 5 guys in or around 13-17 mil will be around 10 mil away from going over the hard cap and lets remember you need 12 guys to fill out your roster. 4 guys with 17 mil + one first year max of 13 leaves you with 81 mil for 5 players. That leaves you with 12 mil for 7 players which is 1.7 a player. Next year forget about it as you will be almost over the hard cap with your 5 players alone at approximately 91 mil. This is something to keep in mind when you are building your franchise. Is he really worth the Max deal?
We have a few new GM's in their first off season with 30+ mil in cap which in theory is great because they can build their own teams but will they build teams that will crumble in 3-4 seasons, my prediction is yes. I hope I'm wrong but we may see the most over paid off season in BBS history which handcuff these franchises for the next 5-7 years.
