Last season, the Nuggets had a faced paced, outside based offense which really worked for them well. One of the reasons that worked so well was because of veteran Allen Iverson, who averaged nearly 26ppg. Iverson, Gibson, and J. Smith all thrived in the offense getting open for tons of shots. The team had the best record in franchise history, putting up 52 wins. But now with the departure of Allen Iverson to retirement, do you draft and sign to replace him and try to keep the same offense? Or is it time to try something new?
What kept them from a big playoff run was some depth up front. Sure they have a strong nucleus of big men who are talented, but Patrick Patterson, De Andre Jordan, and Nazr Mohammed are just not at the same level as a lot of guys out there. PP and Jordan still are very young, and could reach that level some day, but right now, they are just decent starters. And with Nazr aging, ducky thought it was time to load up big.
It was rumored that the duck would take a SG with the 9th pick. James Harden was a name that was being talked about a lot in Denver. The pick made sense, get yourself a SG who could play right away and could maybe end up filling AIs spot. However, I guess the duck didn't think Harden could fill shoes that big, and he decided if he could bulk up his front court to where he wants it, he would be a more improved team.
The new look Nuggets are going for a strong defensive front court, with and offensive-loaded back court. They still have a lot of time to fill that SG spot. With all the trading pieces (picks), with a couple more picks in the draft, and with FA coming up soon, I think they will find someone they want to play SG for them. Was Riek the right pick for the nuggets? Or would Harden or someone else have been the better choice? We'll have to play the waiting game to see how Riek pans out, hopefully this one doesn't come back to haunt us.
