Spencer and the Contract Year
After managing the Golden State Warriors in the early years of the BBS, Commissioner Spencer has since made his living controlling the league and assisting franchises in need of direction. Teams such as Minnesota (now a Western Conference powerhouse), Dallas (currently a 52-30 team), Memphis (who now have a direction) and Chicago (sit in very good-stead for the future) have benefited from Spencer’s journey around the league. Spencers last stop (in Chicago) was made to help out a GM who was short of time, and now that Krup is back, the Commissioner now has to search for another city willing to accept his services.
This is where arguments have begun and opinions voiced over where he should go. Usually, Spencer would head to the team in the worst position possible, however this time around, many believe that Spencer should not reward losing and an in-active GM, and instead, help out a team who are almost over the edge and could use some experience to help them notch up a few wins.
If Spencer does go to a bottom team and help resurrect them, GM’s such as Hernando and Reily have questioned the meaning of the ‘contract year’ which is a rule almost exclusive to the BBS. “What is the point of a contract year if Spence is going to get them out of it?”. With that, the debate raged on with many agreeing with Reily’s sentiments.
Teams such as Houston, the LA Clippers and the New Jersey Nets have had their named bandied around. Boston has also been brought up as a team that could provide Spencer with a different situation to work with. Furthermore, Portland’s name has also been brought up. “Help someone who really will appreciate the benefits of it” is the mutual feeling of most of the leagues GM’s regarding the issue.
Where will Spencer go? In my opinion, he will head out West to assist in Texas. Houston were a top 5 Western Conference team. Their GM puts in a lot of effort, however they have lacked a personality in their front office who has a real desire to win.
