Seattle, Washington
The stadium was empty and the team had just ended their worst year as a franchise. 13-69, one of the worst records any BBS team has ever had. "Morale was down, fans were upset, coaching staff was upset, the locker room was just one hell hole." Towel Boy Larry Pasini said yesterday. "I mean everyone was optimistic about the new young gun we were going to get in the draft, but everyone was pointing fingers at everyone else." A level of excitement came during the lotto only to be drowned when the Sonics wouldn't be drafting the three young guns Tyreke Evans, Kevin Love or Nicholas Batum. "We were stuck with Greg Monroe, I mean he was good but he was nothing like those three Pasini said." Luck has always been against this team but a twist of fate was about to head to the Emerald City by ways of Lousiana. Greg Monroe will now forever be known "The Greatest Sonic Player of all time, never to play a game."
Loaded with only the reliable, yet old Bonzi Wells and the underachieving Raymond Felton the Sonics came into the 2009 off season in a state of perplextion. They had no real path, just somehow, someway get better. Greg Monroe was the diamond in the rough. Let us track the Sonics offseason.
Trade 1
Toronto Raptors send
Gilbert Arenas
Seattle Sonics send
Greg Monroe
This was the beginning, the Sonics had 42 million dollars in cap space so they could definitely afford Arenas, but what was the point in getting him? Of course he is one of the top 10 players in the league, but with a lackluster arsenal would it be worth it. Before hanging up the phone with Toronto the Sonics GM Pig went to the phone see if he could swing Arenas for something better. He thought all hope was lost until Duce McGoose the Indiana GM came up with an offer.
Trade 2
Indiana Pacers send
Rudy Fernandez
Nicolas Batum
Seattle Sonics send
Gilbert Arenas
"This is exactly what I wanted to happen." Pig said this month to Oink Magazine. "If I was getting Arenas the soul purpose was to get more talent and thats exactly what I did with Indy. I got Arenas, so pretty much I traded Greg Monroe for the guy picked two spots in front of me and a nice young spect. Could of I gotten more? Probably yeah, but I was in such a state of euphoria because I pulled of some mastery that I didn't care."
The Sonics were looking better now with the addition of Fernandez and Batum however the BBS state of events would take a turn for better for the Emerald City.
"EASTCOAST CHAMPS REBUILDING, CHICAGO AND TORONTO RETOOLING, READ ALL ABOUT IT"
Young paper boys such as the ones below screamed these exact lines all over cities across America. The hierarchy teams of the east such as Chicago and Toronto were retooling sending Dirk to San Antonio and Dwayne Wade to Minnesota. This was important to the Seattle franchise as they held Chicago 2010 draft pick. The BBS was changing for better or worse and GM Pig thought he might jump on the bandwagon and see where that took him.
FA Signing 1: Danny Granger
FA was looking pretty solid this year and the Sonics still had 21 million left in cap so they targeted for someone who was good now but even better in the future. "Lakers had Hard Cap problems so I thought it would be a great shot to grab the under-utilized Danny Granger from them." The Sonics decided to go after Granger and Gerald Green, two young scorers who have blue-chip written all over them. However, when Gerald took the money to be a Sixer, Seattle capitalized on grabbing Granger. "I was kinda someone in the background in L.A." Granger said after his contract signing "I knew I would come into a ballclub in Seattle and start off as a leader, get the playing time I deserved."
The Sonics looked decent at this time. Fernandez, Granger, Batum....looked great for the future. However, things were about to get better.
Stay tuned for Part II......of the 3 part series Why Greg Monroe is my Favorite BBS player ever.
