What the BBS Could Learn from Eastern Iowa
Most teams in the BBS score over 100 points per game. Most teams in the BBS have no trouble doing this. Most teams in the BBS is not all.
That is why for some of the teams in the BBS that struggle to do this, they could learn a little something from Eastern Iowa about basketball. Now when you are learning something about basketball you would think Indiana or North Carolina, not Iowa. However this is an exception my friend.
Meet Dave Arseneault, Men's Head Basketball Coach at Grinnell College, a Division 3 school located in Eastern Iowa.
Arseneault has a simple game plan, run and gun...to extremes. He took Paul Westhead's Loyola Marymount offense and took it to the extremes.
The game plan is to take quick shots, mostly 3 pointers, and if you miss get the offensive rebound for a quick put back. Then you go to a full court press. They hope to create a quick turnover but a lot of the times they give up an easy bucket.
Arseneault has came out with a book and video titled "The Running Game: A Formula for Success," and it has some actual principles to the game plan. They are as follows:
- 94 shots per game at least
- More than half must be 3 pointers
- Shoot 25 more times than their opponents
- Of the shots they miss they must collect the offensive rebound 33% of the time
- Create 32 turnovers
Arseneault said this on his strategy "It's hard to explain how the other guys dunking on you can be a good thing. But for us it's all about controlling the tempo and maintaining a sense of chaos."
Now you play a crazy game on the court, why not have a crazy substitution system. Since the game plan takes its toll on players physically Arseneault uses the whole team every game. It is not uncommon for them to sub in 5 players at once.
There are people out there that are against this game plan. It won't work everywhere. However it has worked for Arseneault and Grinnell. Before this game plan Grinnell lost, always. However with it they at least have a shot at the Conference title. Since they play so extreme they always have a chance to win because you never know what to expect.
Maybe teams in the BBS shouldn't be doing this to the extremes. However why not venture out of the box a little bit and try something a little different? Why not try and apply some of this innovation and strategy? This system allows the underdog a chance to play bigger and better than the other team night in and night out.
Again in the BBS you can't just throw out any 5 guys and say run and gun. You need some talent. However I believe that there are teams out there that try and play it safe, why not take just a little bit of the Girnnell system and apply. Allow your guys to run. There is no hurt in getting some fast break points when you have the chance.
