Decided to do this again. I didn't mention all teams and there were some big moves made last night.
This one will be on the Suns, Warriors, and Spurs since they are leading the West.
Phoenix Suns
The Suns are very close to the hard cap but possess one of the best starting 5 in the BBS.
At the point they have Jason Kidd. Few players can play the point position the way he does. He sets his teammates up so well. He isn't blowing you out of the water with his stats but his impact on the game is huge. Watching Bull's point guard Manu Ginobli defend Kidd would be interesting in a 7 game series.
At the 2 the Suns have Tracy McGrady. So athletic he can get to the rim and finish as good as anyone at his position. His length is a load for anyone to handle and Joe Johnson would have his hands full with TMac. In a game against the Bulls earlier in the year TMac dropped 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Suns and Bulls are a like because they both have a 7 foot beast playing small forward. The Suns have Kevin Garnett. KG does everything with little to no effort he is amazing. He is averaging 26 points per game to lead the Suns.
The Suns did have Chris Webber at the 4 but traded for a familiar face, defensive ace Ben Wallace. The Suns give up some scoring for some serious defense and rebounding. Can Wallace rattle Elton Brand down low in the paint? Playing alongside Wallace down low is the young and energetic Ousmane Cisse. Not good for points but gets you rebounds and blocks. He doesn't have to worry about guarding anyone, Marcus Camby hardly touches the ball on offense.
The Suns have a very good starting 5 but they lack the scoring to support KG and TMac. Kidd is a fine point guard to have and Wallace and Cisse do their jobs but they need that 3rd option. A deal could be made soon because the Suns want to avoid the hard cap and they are close to hitting it. I think due to the lack of third option the Bulls would easily win a series but you can never completely count out a team led by Garnett and McGrady.
Golden State Warriors
The Warriors couldn't get it done with the best point guard in the BBS so now they will try it with the best big man in the BBS, Tim Duncan.
The Warriors won't have Tim Duncan for to long in the regular season as he is injured right now but they should still make the playoffs. Once they are in, watch out.
Right now the Warriors don't have much of anything at the point. They are trying to get by with Chucky Atkins, Sarunas Jasikevicius, and Bobby Jackson. At shooting guard they still have Kobe Bryant, the best perminter player in the league.
Vince Carter is still there at small forward to be the third option. An athletic wing Carter is known for his fan favorite dunks. With Tim Duncan now able to score in the paint it should keep the defense honest and open up the lane more for Vince and Kobe.
The man in the middle is the best big in the BBS, Tim Duncan. A 7 foot monster, scores 27 points and grabs 13 rebounds. He is a wall on defense blocking over 3 shots per game. He doesn't get any scoring help down low but has some bigs to help do the dirty work in Scot Pollard, Brian Skinner, Chris Anstey and Todd MacCulloch.
The Warriors now have an inside threat. Can the best big and the best guard get it done in the West? We will see. Without Tim Duncan for most of the regular season though the Warriors could fall to the 7th or 8th seed out West giving them one of the best teams in the West to face in round 1, should be interesting to see if they can get back to the Finals and even more interesting to see how they do against the Bulls. I still like the Bulls though but they now have a different look so maybe that equals different results.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs are a team no one talks about but they have been on top of the West pretty much all season. Winning over 60% of their games they get no respect.
The Spurs have two point guards in the back court with Chauncey Billups and Roko Ukic. Billups is Billups shooting and distributing the ball well. Roko has came on this year for a breakout year and is probably the most improved player. He gets 16 points and dishes out 8 assists per game.
Up front the Spurs have Shawn Marion, a high flying small forward that manges to score 20 points per game, shut down his man on defense, and pull down 8 rebounds per game. They also have Shareef Abdur-Rahim who hardly plays but can score the ball very well.
Down low the Spurs have two guys who bring it every night. Mehmet Okur gets 16 points and 10 rebounds while Channy Frye averages 14 points and 9 rebounds. They also have the young and improving Drew Gooden is is capable of playing well.
The Spurs don't really have an absolute superstar, I wonder if they even had someone in the all star game, but they have 5 or 6 good players who bring it night in and night out. All their starters average 14 points or more so they get balanced scoring, plus Shareef gets 8 points in just 16 minutes off the bench.
I don't know that the Spurs could handle the Bulls in a 7 game series but the Spurs are much better then people give them credit for. They don't have weaknesses. They could be a little better on defense but they are good enough to win their conference.
There are a lot of good teams in this league. Teams that can give the Bulls a scare. This should be a very interesting and exciting playoffs this year.
