BBS is in full swing into their 2006 season with very little trade activity so far but there are plenty of rumblings and grumblings around the league to indicate change is on the horizon. We'll start with the Eastern Conference and soon move out West in our next article
The New York Knicks are possibly a piece or two away from overtaking the Bulls for their second straight title. They have two lotto bound picks which could be dangling to someone looking to rebuild to give the Knicks that missing piece. Or do the Knicks think they are poised enough to go war with this team as is. We'll see....
New Jersey's front office has been looking for a home for one or possibly two of their four PG's on roster. Going into training camp it was hard for the coaching staff to give attention to each of them while running drills. Luke Ridnour seemed to be odd man out and his skills have taken a decline. Yes it's possible that there is such a thing as too much depth.
With an average age of 30 in their starting lineup the Washington Wizards are running out of time for serious championship runs. With tons of above average talent is it possible GM Jah can muster that up into acquire a premier talent? If not this team will fall right into mediocrity.
The Diesel is running strong in Boston however it seems that coaching hasn't found the right mixture of style to really make this team gel. Coaching has been very indecisive as they have changed tempo every sim. Players are confused and maybe they should just stick to something for a bit to see if the diesel will sail or sink.
GM Haberman promises that there was some Magic in his deal to acquire up and coming Travis Outlaw and underachieving Rip Hamilton. Remember when Outlaw was averaging 25ppg two weeks ago well that has dipped to under 19ppg. Maybe the Magic should bring back Jimmie Williams and Rico Hill two of their former first round draft choices. I see Haberman pulling some more rabbits out of his cap if he wants this team into the playoffs
The Miami Heat are reconsidering their name to Miami Beat. It makes tons of sense as Miami is known for its latino music and dance, dreadful losing, lackluster play and coaching. Pretty bad too when 75% of your roster can't even get into these clubs legally.
The 76ers are 86ed from the playoffs for the third year straight however this is exactly where they want to be. GM Andy has done a superb job of utilizing draft picks and dealing players away for future considerations and cap relief. The 76ers will be looking to make a big splash next year as they will have another top 5 lotto pick added to the roster.
The Chicago Bulls are back again looking to defend their title. However look for the Bulls to make some moves to relieve their financial burdens for 2007. Should be interesting to see how they play it.
The Cleavland Cavs truly believe that if they took down the Bulls in game 7 last year they would be the defending champions. They also believe that they are even better than they were a season ago. Look for the Cavs to deal off David West for more help up front.
The Hawks are soaring but rumor has it they want to be big wheelers and dealers come deadline. They are the first and only team to hit Hard cap woes and want to deal with it accordingly. Big Z is the centerpiece that could make anyone serious contenders. Does Big Z stay in the division? Some places make sense.
The Raptors would love to make the contracts of Robert Traylor and Desmond Mason extinct. Traylor's value is peaked and if it already hasn't passed the time is now to cash in. Raps wouldn't mind missing the playoffs to cash in on one of their few lotto picks of the future. If the Raps pick is lotto to go along with the Nets and Clipps the Raptors can immediately rebuild to the top of the central.
The Detroit Pistons should never be counted out because if you do that is only motivation to awake a sleeping giant. The Pistons have so much young talent and depth. I don't need to reveal the master plan but the obvious goal is to get back to BBS glory.
The Bucks need to anti up to really get this team in full swing. If the Bucks could somehow part ways with John Salmons or Eddie Griffin they would be able to purchase the rights to the deal of either or once one is sent packing. Griffin is a defensive monster and has a shorter contract in terms of length which should be attractive to contending teams. This would free up cap room next year to ink up Chris Bosh while also having some cap space to land a big time free agent.
The Pacers need to become erasers and get rid of Ben Wallace or Tim Duncan. The two will combine to make 45 Million Dollars next season while Finley will put them over the cap. Not too shabby to waste your entire cap space on three players. Bibby will also make 20 million next season. 75 Mil invested and we still don't have a starting lineup. The Pacers need to completely re-gut their organization and start from scratch its sad to say but Duce gave Indiana the best cock tease for 9 seasons.
The Hornets tried to create a buzz with their offseason yet seems they are the ones who have been stung. Stung with contracts they will ultimately regret giving. Sure Nene and Smush have given them 20ppg efforts but all that is doing is paying 26 million dollars to have a top 15 lotto pick instead of a top 5. The Hornets should have looked to lesser tiered free agents and signed them to expiring offers to ship off for more picks to contending teams this season. Their splash in free agency should have been at least 2 seasons away. Wonder if they cash in on Marvin before Marvin cashes in on them?
