The Dallas Mavericks are a team that is looking to rebuild, a common occurrence in the BBS these days. But. for a rebuilding team, they may actually have a solid group of talent when the seasons begins. Their front line is anchored by Vladimir Stepania and Anderson Varejao. Stepania provides an interior defensive presence and is one of the games better shot blockers. Reports are that Varejao is in the best shape of his career and appears to be on the verge of a breakout season. The Mavs have a back court that is comprised of youth and veteran leadership. Sam Cassell returns for what seems to be his 80th season, while 1st year player, Guillermo Diaz, has impressed everyone over the summer. This team may be looking to the future, but they should be competitive most nights with their current group of players.
Predicted Record --- 40-42
The Denver Nuggets are a vastly improved team from a year ago and may have enough to win the division. The Nuggets are solid at every starting position and possess quality depth as well. Gasol is the face of the franchise, while Andrei Kirilenko and Josh Smith round out one of the better front lines in the league. Their back court is very solid, and should be improved from last season, as Delonte West appears to ready to become a legit #1 guard. This is a playoff team and a legit contender for the Western crown.
Predicted Record --- 50-32
The Houston Rockets aren't a Championship favorite, but should be a very competitive group, and barring a complete collapse, should challenge for home court in the first round of the playoffs. A team with a solid mix of young and old, they should once again be led by the forward duo of Antawn Jamison and Danny Fortson. Tyson Chandler provides a great compliment to the offensively minded Fortson, while Jamison rounds out one of, if not the best, rebounding front line in the league. The backcourt is steady and should be improved from last season with further development from Marquis Daniels. Definitely a team that should win more than it loses.
Predicted Record --- 45-37
The Minnesota Timberwolves continue the rebuilding process but, are in better shape than the last few years. They currently have some young pieces worth developing in Travis Outlaw, Jarret Jack and FA signing, Chris Wilcox. There really isnt much to say other than "Bring on the Lotto".
Predicted Record --- 28-54
The San Antonio Spurs bring back a familiar group, led by forward Shawn Marion and guard Chauncey Billups. The only real question in San Antonio is whether veteran big, Mehmet Okur, will continue as the starting center. Reports indicate that Channing Frye has improved during the off season and appears ready to take the starting spot from the veteran. Management believes they have their pg of the future in Ukic, who should see a more significant role this season as the primary backup to Billups. Competitive squad, but should max out as a 2nd round team in the West.
Predicted Record --- 44-38
The Utah Jazz boast some impressive young talent throughout their lineup. The problem with this team is that they lack depth and experience. They should provide some nice highlights over the course of the season, but they will struggle as their youth suffer more growing pains.
Predicted Record --- 33-49
The Memphis Grizzlies are a veteran team that desperately wants to rebuild. Unfortunately, they don't have their own 1st round pick this season and therefore, should attempt to make the playoffs. While older than most, this team does possess some talent. Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis are quality scoring options while Shawn Bradley and Antonio McDyess are still solid as 30 somethings. While they are far from a contender, they could surprise and challenge for a playoff spot, as the Western conference, for the most part, is still developing.
