Nets use the summer to improve, are ready to play
The New Jersey Nets had a fairly simple off season. They did make one major trade by sending Steve Francis to the Sonics in exchange for Corey Maggette and Troy Hudson but other that no major moves were made.
"We like most of the guys, we would like to make a couple other changes but right now we can't do much, just wait and see what's out there." stated GM Rommie.
The Nets did manage to sign free agent forward Lammond Murray and keep backup forward Udonis Haslem.
"Lammond is a veteran who really shoots the ball well and gives us some depth at the 3. Udonis is a role player that we really like. We value those bigs who can defend and rebound. We feel they are key to making our team work because they do the little things." Rommie said.
Several of the Nets players had great summers working out. Most came back much improved.
Jose Calderon was probably your average all around point guard but he used his summer time wisely. He improved his shooting and ball handling a lot and has seemed to have stepped up his defense. He looks to have passed Nate Robinson on the depth chart and will likely start on opening day.
"I just wanted to get better. I went out and bought some of the better basketball video series and they are why I improved so much." Calderon said.
Nate Robinson is back with some much better defense. He is still the same on offense and will be tough to contain but now he can stop guys as well.
"I felt that defense was the next thing for me to get better. I really wanted to step up m defense to help my team win." commented Robinson.
Then there are the big men, Robert Swift and Chris Kaman. Kaman worked hard to develop some post moves. He watched old film of one of the all time greats in George Mikan and has added some of his moves to his game.
"I love watching the old bigs play. They knew how to score down low. Hopefully my hard work will help us get more wins." said Kaman.
Swift who is only 20 years old was very raw last year. He dedicated his summer to defense knowing that with all the guards and Chris he won't get many touches.
"We have a lot of scorers, so I knew I wasn't going to play more be working on my post game. But I felt that if I could improve my defense then hey maybe I can take some of Jamal's minutes and hopefully get a chance to show the league what I can do." Swift states.
Hopefully the changes and player improvement can help the Nets win more ball games. They had a tough year last year and they must improve.
