1. Philadelphia 76ers – SG Brandon Roy
The 76ers already have a franchise wing player in Gerald Green. Green is going to be a great scorer but somewhat weak on defense. The choice for the #1 pick seems to be Roy or Andrea Bargnani. Bargnani will never be a good defender in the BBS which the 76ers will need next to Green. This makes Roy the 76ers choice
2. Los Angeles Lakers (from Memphis Grizzlies) – SF Andrea Bargnani
The Lakers already have a very young core that is going to get even more help with this pick. Andrea Bargnani seems to be high on most GMs boards. He will give the Lakers a great scoring wing. Lamarcus Aldridge could be a surprise pick here because the Lakers are in need of another big man.
3. Utah Jazz – C LaMarcus Aldridge
The Utah Jazz currently don’t have a legit center. Al Jefferson is better suited to be a PF which makes room for Aldridge. The Jazz could have their starting frontline for the next decade with the Aldridge and Jefferson combo.
4. New York Knicks (from Minnesota Timberwolves) – SF Rudy Gay
The biggest need of the Knicks for years has been a stud wing. Rudy Gay can play either SG or SF. Gay is the type of player that is going to make the Knicks a tough team to beat in a couple of years.
5. Orlando Magic – SG Randy Foye
The Magic can go many directions with this pick. The pick will likely depend on what style of offense they want to run. Randy Foye may not start right away but he gives the Magic a great backup PG and SG right away. Tyrus Thomas could just as easily be the pick here to take over for an aging Vitaly Potapenko in a year or two.
6. Los Angeles Lakers (from New Jersey Nets) – PF Tyrus Thomas
As mentioned above, the Lakers need a big man to go along with Amare Stoudemire. Tyrus Thomas can do that. While neither is an ideal center, they will provide one of the most athletic front lines in the league.
7. Miami Heat (from Sacramento Kings) – PF Fran Vasquez
The Heat already have two former lottery picks that will start at PG and SG. They lack a big man to build around and Vasquez could be just that. The Heat can go about any direction with this pick except PG. The best player available should be the pick and Vasquez could be that as well.
8. Milwaukee Bucks (from Los Angeles Clippers) – PG Sergio Rodriguez
The Bucks have assembled a good young core and need more depth then anything. David Lee could be this pick but the Bucks already have numerous young big men. Sergio Rodriguez will immediately be their backup PG which they need badly. This will make him the pick.
9. Miami Heat – PF David Lee
Even after adding Vasquez two picks ago, the Heat don’t have much of a front line. Neither Lee nor Vasquez look to be capable of playing center at this point, but SF is a possibility. The Heat just need good players at this point and Lee is going to be one.
10. Portland Trailblazers (from Los Angeles Lakers) – SG Ronnie Brewer
The Blazers are a very good team who can take the best player available. At this point in the draft, there are no standout players to choose from. The Blazers should take the best player available. Looking at ratings Ronnie Brewer is possibly that and can likely start from day 1 in Portland.
11. Miami Heat (from New Orleans Hornets) – SF Rodney Carney
The Heat have added two big men in this draft and may need to add another one. Rodney Carney isn’t that but he could be a very good wing incase Martell Webster doesn’t develop or one of big men can’t play SF.
12. Boston Celtics – PG Marcus Williams
Boston’s biggest need for years has been PG. Theo Popaloukas did a good job there last year but he provides no defense. There are many good PGs in this draft and Marcus Williams could very well be a steal at pick 12. This pick could be any of the good young PG prospects left though.
13. Milwaukee Bucks – PG Daniel Gibson
This would be a questionable pick with the Bucks already have selected another PG and have a 1st round PG from 2 years ago. Gibson looks like he may be able to play some SG which is also a need for the Bucks and makes him the pick.
