Many comment about trades when they first are posted as some show outrage and out crys of rape! while others say good deal for him or him or both. Many look at the ratings of today and forget about tomorrow while others forget the draft picks the could be and could have been. Here is a look at some deals that have had a way of playing out to one's advantage while to other's disadvantage.
Bulls send: Jared Jeffries, Joel Pyrzbilla, Eric Snow, Mil '08 first, A future first by '06
Hawks send: Antonio Mcdyess
Analysis: The Hawks sent a large contract away for a player who had already reached the pinnacle of his career in Antonio Mcdyess. He acquired a player Jared Jeffries, 19th overall selection in the draft looked at as a project player, who is a player that can do it all. Jeffries became the prize of the deal as he is nearly B rated across the board. Joel Pyrzbilla is amongst the league leaders in blocked shots but Bender turned Pyrzbilla into Bradley which turned into Zydrunas Ilgauskas.
Trade Verdict: Hawks
Nets Trade: Utah 2005 1st round pick
Bulls Trade:# 25, Jazz 2003 2nd (20th in 2nd round)
Analysis: Bulls traded away a current pick for a future that wasn’t projected well but saw promise in the value of the pick. This assumption turned out to be correct as the Jazz saw it time to rebuild. The Bulls traded the Jazz pick back to the Nets in exchange for Marvin Williams. The Nets turned and dealt the pick to the Jazz for Anderson Varejao.
Trade Verdict: Bulls
Suns send: Carlos Boozer, Eddie Jones
Magic send: Allen Iverson
Analysis: Magic sent Iverson packing as they needed to acquire depth at the time and were in the hopes of rebuilding with the young Boozer aboard. The Suns were looking to stack up on talent and win now. The Magic are still rebuilding as Boozer is a bust and the Suns won their division last season and have had back to back to back 50 win seasons.
Trade Verdict: Suns
Pistons trade: Ben Gordon
Nets trade: Eddy Curry, 2008 Nets First Rounder
Analysis: Pistons trade hot shot guard, Ben Gordon, to acquire young big man Eddy Curry along with a first round draft choice selection with the trade trigger happy NJ Nets. Eddy Curry has turned into a top 10 center while Ben Gordon isn’t even a top 100 bench player.
Trade Verdict: Pistons
suns send: 2 upgrades
magic send: dallas '05 pick
Analysis: The Magic essentially sent the draft rights to Channing Frye for something he could have done himself in acquiring upgrades.
Trade Verdict: Suns
Clippers Receive: G Andre Miller, PF Andrei Kirilenko
Kings Receive: #8 pick overall, #10 pick overall, NO 05' 1st, ORL 05' 1st
Analysis: The Kings sent 2 large contracts packing their effort to rebuild and drafted with the 8 and 10 picks Charlie Villanueva and Devin Harris. The NO ’05 pick enabled them to acquire their own pick which landed them Chris Paul. The cap space that the Kings acquired enabled them to sign Latrell Spreewell and they will have about 40 mil in cap next season to work with if Lumley sits tight with his team, which he should. The Clippers landed two players which will keep him out of hell but in purgatory in Andre Miller and AK-47 also won’t provide them with any cap space.
Trade Verdict: Kings
Looking back in the trades you see some funny patterns of trades, trades that made other trades possible. Trade relationships that form over seasons and you see that these GM’s turn to each other in case of need such as Suns/Magic, Sonics/Blazers, Bucks/Bulls, Raps/Clippers, Nets/Everyone. Magic, Sonics, Nets by far have made the most trades in the past 3 seasons. The Hornets and Magic probably traded away the most picks out of any teams as they seem to give 1+ in every deal they make. Most trades though had a way of balancing themselves out here or there and hardly any team has kept a player that they acquired for three full seasons.
