1. Philadelphia 76ers- PG Chris Paul
What looked like it was going to be a very difficult decision in the draft is becoming much easier. It seems that almost everyone has Wake Forest star PG Chris Paul number one on their draft boards. The 76ers are in need of talent anywhere they can get it. This is the best PG class in the history of the league and they can’t afford to pass on Paul or Deron Williams if given the number 1 pick.
2. Denver Nuggets- PG Deron Williams
The Denver Nuggets have a ton of talent but can’t seem to put it together in a weak Western Conference. The Nuggets management is now in trouble of losing its job if it can’t put a 40 win season together next year. Illinois PG Deron Williams may be the best way to make that happen. Adding him with LeBron James and Josh Smith will make everyone stop wondering if the team will become a championship contender and begin wondering when it will be.
3. Utah Jazz- C Andrew Bogut
For anyone who has ever seen Manas put a team together, they know he depends on having a true center. Most of the time that center also has at least an average midrange game and can pass. Andrew Bogut will fit this mold perfectly and will help put the Jazz back in playoff contention as soon as Manas wants the team to be.
4. Sacrament Kings- SG Monta Ellis
There is no chance that Lumley will pass on Monta Ellis. Not only does it make a lot of sense to pair him with Devin Harris and Charlie Villanueva, but he is the by far the biggest believer in conspiracies about league Commish Spencer Martin. One of the most popular and most realistic is Spencer’s love for real life Golden State Warriors. Monta Ellis is one of those which makes this pick look even more sexy to Lumley and about everyone else.
5. New Jersey Nets- SF Gerald Green
The New Jersey Nets have once again taken steps backward to try and rebuild. They are once again in great shape to do so. The team already possess 2 of the 3 hardest things to acquire in this league: a young dominant PG and C. The only thing that is missing beside the role players is a true number one scorer. Gerald Green is one of the few players in this draft that could potentially possess that ability. Green must be the Nets pick at this point.
6. Detroit Pistons (from Minnesota Timberwolves)- C Andrew Bynum
The Pistons are in the position to take the best player available at this point. That player is easily between C Andrew Bynum and SF Danny Granger. Both provide something that the Pistons are going to need sometime in the near future. The constant injuries to the Pistons array of aging yet great big men and Eddy Curry’s pending free agency make this choice easier. Andrew Bynum will be the pick unless the Pistons decide to change styles and run a more prototypical small forward which Granger can easily develop into.
7. Boston Celtics- PG Shaun Livingston
This could be the safest pick on the board. If the Boston Celtics are up and haven’t moved up in the draft then Shaun Livingston has to be the pick. The team is lacking in many areas but PG is by far the biggest one. Livingston will provide a long term solution to that problem in Boston.
8. Golden State Warriors (from Memphis Grizzlies)- SF Danny Granger
In my eyes, Danny Granger to the Golden State Warriors is one of the best fits in this draft. He can easily develop into a third option behind Baron Davis and Tracy McGrady. He will also provide all league caliber defense very early in his career. Granger is a player who will help the Warriors start a climb back into the top of the Western Conference.
9. Phoenix Suns (from Dallas Mavericks)- SG Josh Childress
The Suns can go many directions with this pick. I think the best pick for them is to add another swing man. They are a title contender right now and none of the big men left are going to fill the role Adonal Foyle will leave if he signs elsewhere in free agency. No of the leftover rookie big men will provide the instant impact Childress will off the bench for the Suns from Day 1.
10. Cleveland Cavaliers- PF Ike Diogu
The Cavs have championship contending talent, most of it hasn’t developed yet. One thing they don’t have that they will need in the future is a good bench scorer. Ike Diogu already looks like a double digit scorer if given the minutes and should develop into one without starting minutes.
11. Miami Heat- SG Martell Webster
This is obviously a need based pick. The best players left are big men, but the Heat already have plenty of young good ones. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Heat went with the value here or traded down. However, the fact remains that at this point the Heat have no legit starting SG options because Mickeal Pietrus hasn’t developed to that level yet. The Heat also don’t have their first round pick next year which means they need more guard talent to compete for a playoff spot.
12. New Jersey Nets (from Atlanta Hawks)- C Channing Frye
It is no secret that Skillz wants Channing Frye. At pick 12, Frye somewhat has fallen into his lap. Frye is the best player left on the board and can move to a position of need (PF) for the Nets. This makes him the obvious choice.
13. Memphis Grizzlies (from New Orleans Hornets)- PF Sean May
The Grizzlies quickly went from a one player team to a team filled with a lot of veteran talent. It remains to be seen how much talent the veterans have, but at the 13 pick there aren’t many players that can help the team out next year. Sean May should be somewhat productive from the start and give the Grizz a bit of a boost off the bench from time to time.
