1(1) - Luol Deng (POR) -
Despite not winning a Rookie of Month award, we rank Deng as this seasons top freshman. Deng's 19.7 ppg average is tops for all first year players. He was also among leaders in rebounds, pulling down over 6 boards a night. Deng showed a good bball IQ and an advanced understanding of the game for someone his age. As a 1st option for the majority of the season, Deng shot the ball efficiently, hitting at a 45% clip from the field. He was a solid 75% from the FT line and proved to be a legit 3pt threat, knocking down 38% from beyond the arc. Deng's performance this season has us convinced that he will be an All Star in the very near future.
2(2) - Jameer Nelson (MIL) -
Arguably the biggest and best surprise of this draft class, Nelson has shown that he has the skills and competitive spirit to be a major contributor at the highest level. He's shooting an outstanding 48.5% from the floor and 41% from 3. He leads all rookies in assists per game, dishing out 7.4 per contest. He did struggle from the FT line and in the turnover department, but his play leads us to believe that he can be a starting pg in this league for many years to come.
3(3) - Jose Calderon (NOH) -
The Hornets made a great decision when the signed Calderon to a contract in the offseason. The Spanish pg did more than enough to earn his paycheck, averaging 13 pts and 7 dimes in his rookie season. He shot an impressive 47% from the floor and a solid 75% from the Ft line. He also did a fine job at playing under control, limiting himself to just over 2 turnovers a night. The jury is still out on what Calderon's potential really is but he showed enough to prove that he definitely belongs in the BBS.
4(5) - Dwight Howard (BOS) -
This 18 year old has given Celtic fans everywhere something to get excited about. Howard is averaging just under 17/10 on the year, while shooting 44% from the floor. While many predicted that he would struggle shooting FT's, his 74% from the charity stripe shows that he may not be a liability in late game situations after all. His 1.4 turnovers per game were also a pleasant surprise. Given his apparent lack of any true weakness, Howard appears to be destined for superstardom.
5(4) - Andre Iguodala (UTA) -
Iguodala rounds out the top 5. His stat line suggests many productive years are ahead for this ultra athletic wing. He's averaging over 15 ppg on 44% while also grabbing 6 boards and dishing out 5 assists per game. He proved to be a tough defender, averaging 1.6 steals per game and does have all defensive team potential. His 3pt shooting and ball control need some work, but as a rookie, Iguodala's season has been extremely impressive.
