Following the 2000 season, the Milwaukee Bucks went to shit. They lost numerous key players to free agency and traded away the two franchise building blocks. They received multiple 1st round picks for SF Jamal Mashburn, and their 2001 1st round pick for Shawn Kemp. Management did this because they felt they had no chance to make the playoffs after the loss of talent in free agency.
The Bucks came back in the 2001 season with a team that had shit written all over it. Most players on the team made you wonder where the fuck these guys came from. The team would go on to have the leagues third worst record. Thanks to some lottery luck they moved from projected pick #3 to actually receiving the #1 overall pick. This caused the front office a major dilemma on who to take. Yao Ming, Amare Stoudamire, and Carmelo Anthony all received serious thought. A blockbuster trade for the Lakers was almost done as well, but in the end Melo was the pick.
Many highly respected GMs in the league doubted the Bucks would be able to be as bad as the year before with a player like Melo. They were all wrong. The Bucks actually had a worse record the next season and tied for the worst record in the league. The Bucks were praying to win the tiebreaker for the #1 overall projected pick, but that didn’t happen and neither did anymore lottery luck. After LeBron ‘Bust’ James was taken #1 overall, the Bucks selected Chris Bosh with the second selection.
By some miracle Stephon Marbury left the highly talented 76ers to play ball in Milwaukee. Othella Harrington also left a more talented Boston Celtic team for Milwaukee. These signings shortened Milwaukee’s rebuilding by at least a year and gave them a third great talent in Marbury and a very good big man with Othella. Many thought the three would immediately lift the Bucks to the playoffs but that didn’t happen. The Bucks suffered a fourth straight losing season and missed the playoffs again. This caused GM Jordan Jones to have to really step up because his job was supposedly in jeopardy.
Jones went out and did everything he could to put a winner on the court now and he did. He acquired the likes of Kenyon Martin and Penny Hardaway. The Bucks had the talent and production to be a great team for the first time in years. The Bucks are in place to make the playoffs for the first time in 5 years. Jones job is easily secure and the Bucks are in as good of a situation as they have ever been in this league.
