Three teams are vying for the final playoff spot out West in the quest of perhaps keeping their job security safe. This three team race is by far one of the least exciting races in terms of playing ability but the results of this race are being watched by many. Minnesota, Memphis, and Dallas are all within .5 games of each other for the 8th and final spot into the playoffs. None of the three above mentioned teams have the the rights to their first round pick which makes forces each franchise race to erase their pick from the lottery selection.
All three of these picks happened to be owned by three dominating teams which is scary for BBS team's all over. The Detroit Pistons can fall lotto again with the rights to the current holder of the 8th seed the Minnesota T-Wolves, a franchise lost in its quest of returning to glory. The Pistons would love to add another youthful to an already deep and talented bench over in Detroit. If you're rooting for the T-Wolves to root against the Pistons, you are only playing devil's advocate as the Phoenix Suns are owners of the Dallas Mavericks first round pick. The Suns are the 1 seed in the West and would love to add some youth to this veteran heavy team. So now fans are rooting for Dallas and Minnesota and want the Grizzlies to be the odd team out but that only helps the newly retooled 2001 BBS Champs the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors are the youngest out of the three contending lotto teams and would have the most to gain out of this draft.
The long shot in this crazy race is the LA Clippers who are currently in the 7th seed out west who could fall out of contention. Besides the Det and Phx haters out there no team would love this more than the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers acquired the right to the Clippers first round selection when parting ways with Superstar Dirk Nowitzki.
Besides lotto luck making this race so interesting, the coaches of Dallas, Memphis, and Minnesota are competing for their jobs. Each of these three teams have had dreadful pasts and the future looks bleek. If perhaps one or two of these teams happen to make the playoffs they can maybe secure themselves one more season at the helm. Fans have already been calling for the heads of each of these coaches and are sick either unsuccessful seasons, mediocre seasons, and simply just no new incoming youthful talent.
This race may be the race to erase the past which was filled with bad trades, coaching, bad contracts and turning a new leaf into the playoffs or perhaps this is the race to erase themselves, their legacy, their reign as coach in their respected franchises. One thing is for sure I'm watching to see what unfolds.
