In hindsight, making a selection in the BBS draft is easy. Because of this, I have decided to go back in time and analyse each and every drafts lottery and determine where individual players would have gone had each respective GM knew what each player was capable of. Ranking players on the basis of ratings, success and statistics, the following report will indicate what the very first BBS draft (1999) would have looked like if each GM had the power of hindsight.
1: Elton Brand
1999 Selection: 1 (Even)
Current Ratings: A- C D+ A- B+ C
1999 Ratings: B C- C- B B- A
Analysis: Brand was the number 1 overall selection in 1999 and would remain that way had the GM's of the BBS sim league had the tool of hindsight at their disposal. Currently averaging 30.1ppg, 11.5rpg, 2.6apg, and a massive 3.9bpg for the 32-8 Bulls, Brand has developed into the best player in the BBS and at the same time, remained as the number 1 pick in the 1999 Hindsight Draft. Described as the "only legit franchise player from this draft" and "still the obvious #1 choice, an absolute stud" by two of the leagues top GM's, Brand truly is the creme of the 1999 crop.
2: Shawn Marion
1999 Selection: 2 (Even)
Current Ratings: B+ B C- A B B
1999 Ratings: B- C+ C- B C+ A
Elton
Analysis: Re-doing the draft today would see Shawn Marion once again picked second behind Elton Brand. A step ahead of anyone else left in the current pool, Marion is currently putting up 21.6ppg and 9 rebounds per night whilst helping his San Antonio Spurs to a stellar 26-17 record. Scouted as a tough defensive player, Marion has lived up to his expectations averaging 1.3spg and 1.9bpg.
3: Andrei Kirilenko
1999 Selection: 3 (Even)
Current Ratings: B+ C C A- B+ B
1999 Ratings: C+ C C- B+ C+ A
Analysis: Rounding out the top 3 is LA's (Clippers), Andrei Kirilenko. Entering the BBS as the drafts top international prospect, Kirilenko has developed into a great offensive and defensive player who can rebound when needed. Currently playing for the 17-24 Clippers, Kirilenko is averaging 18.7ppg, 10.9rpg, 3.1apg and 1.6bpg in just over 30 minutes per game. Described as not being a franchise player however an excellent backup, there is "no argument that Marion wasn't the right choice".
4: Steve Francis
1999 Selection: 5 (+1)
Current Ratings: B- B A B+ C C
1999 Ratings: B- C+ C+ C C- A
Analysis: "An excellent athlete, can play the 1 or the 2, excllent handles and passing skills". Thats Steve Francis. Selected 5th in the 1999 BBS draft, Francis is the 4th best player in it's class and has climbed 1 spot to 4 in the 1999 Hindsight Draft. Putting up a little over 15, 9 and 5 a night along with 2.0spg for the Atlanta Hawks, Francis is a tremendous point guard who will be a solid starter for years to come. His only downside is his turnover count (3.2).
5: Corey Maggette
1999 Selection: 9 (+4)
Current Ratings: B- A- C B+ C B
1999 Ratings: B- C C- C C A
Analysis: Currently the only player on the 76ers roster, Corey Maggette (18.0ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.3apg, 1.6spg) was selected 9th in 1999, however would be taken 5th had GM's known his true potential. "Development has been slow, but he appears to be turning a corner" was the feeling of a BBS GM, and his statistics tend to agree. A great mid-range shooter, solid defensive rankings and the ability to improve make Maggette's 4 pick jump feasible.
6: Jason Terry
1999 Selection: 6 (Even)
Current Ratings: C- A B+ B- D+ B
1999 Ratings: C- B+ C+ C+ C A
Analysis: Only recently traded to Toronto, Jason Terry is an "underrated player that has blossomed further into his career". Not recieving much minutes or possesion of the ball this season (7.8ppg, 5.5apg, 2.9rpg), Terry is an excellent shooter with great passing skills. His defensive game is still shaky, however his selection at number 6 in 1999 would be replicated had the draft been redone. A very solid pick.
7: Andre Miller
1999 Selection: 8 (+1)
Current Ratings: C+ C+ A- A- C- B
1999 Ratings: C+ C- B B- C- A
Analysis: Miller was taken at number 8 in 1999, and would have jumped ahead 1 spot and a few hundred grand had he been taken at number 7 in the Hindsight Draft. For a pure point guard with no real offensive weaponry, Miller is averaging 11 and 8 along with 2.2 steals per outing however turning the ball over almost 4 times a game. A "steady player and legit 1", Miller makes the move from 8 to 7 in the 1999 Hindsight Draft. "Dre is a solid PG" solidifies this position and his ability to start and play the 1 in the BBS.
8: Rip Hamilton
1999 Selection: 4 (-4)
Current Ratings: C A- C B+ C- C
1999 Ratings: C+ B C- C+ D+ A
Analysis: Averaging 8, 4 and 2 on a stacked Chicago Bulls side (35-11), Hamilton suffers a massive drop and would have been taken at 8 instead of 4 had the draft been re-done today. Described by a league source as a "quality shooter and a good 5th starter", Rip was a draft day "disapointment" and suffers a 4 point drop in the 1999 Hindsight draft. Solid ratings haven't converted into on court action for the skinny small forward.
9: Jamal Crawford
1999 Selection: 7 (-2)
Current Ratings: C A C+ C D+ D
1999 Ratings: C- B- C C- D A
Analysis: Scouts believed that Crawford "could have benefited from going to college" due to his lack of basic fundamentals. This, along with his one dimensional game see J-Craw drop 2 places in the 1999 Hindsight Draft. A quality outside shooter and "6th man" type of player, Crawford was a project entering the 1999 draft and clearly did not pan out to perfection or anywhere close.
10: Morris Peterson
1999 Selection: 13 (+3)
Current Ratings: C+ A- C C+ C C
1999 Ratings: C B- C B- C B
Analysis: Selected just inside the lottery in 1999, Peterson jumps 3 places in the 1999 Hindsight Draft. A capable outside shooter who could be described as a great "rotation player", Mo-Pete is averaging 9.3ppg, 3.3rpg, 1.8apg and 0.8tpg in 20 minutes an outing for the 29-15 Rockets. Drafted at 13 because most GM's saw only limited upside to Peterson's game, Mo is still a solid selection and skips ahead 3 places.
11: Desmond Mason
1999 Selection: 11(Even)
Current Ratings: C+ A- C C+ C C
1999 Ratings: C B- C B- C B
Analysis: Quite a sound selection in hindsight, Mason has developed into an "Athletic wing that knows how to finish with authority at the hoop.". Aside from dunking the ball and putting up a few points per game, Mason doesn't offer much else. D-Mase had the "potential to develop into a solid defensive player" according to scouts, however his ability to defend in the College game has not transcended into the BBS. In a recent draft overview, GM's generally believed that Mason "was a solid pick here" and his respective team "couldn't have done much better".
12: Jeff Foster
1999 Selection: 12 (Even)
Current Ratings: B C- D+ B- B+ C
1999 Ratings: C+ C- D+ C+ B B
Analysis: Another selection in where the picks team didn't go much wrong, Foster has cemented himself as a "quality reserve" and an excellent rebounder. Still lacking "finesse and athletisism", Foster could serve as a valuable bench player and relief big man for a contender come finals time.
13: Wally Szczerbiak
1999 Selection: 10 (-3)
Current Ratings: C A- C- C C+ C
1999 Ratings: C B C- C C A
Analysis: "Wally was a disappointment". Playing just over 15 minutes per game for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Sczcerbiak is getting little of the ball for a lottery pick, averaging 3.0ppg. Wally developed into a consistant outside shooter, however his "lack of quickness/athleticism really hindered his development". Like many other players in the 1999 class, Wally's drop was due to his one dimensional game. If the 1999 draft was redone, he'd just fit inside the top 13.
#1 - Elton Brand - B C- C- B B- A
#2 - Shawn Marion - B- C+ C- B C+ A
#3 - Andrei Kirilenko - C+ C C- B+ C+ A
