1 - Elton Brand (CHI) -
4 Player of the Week awards and 1 Player of the Month award suggest that Elton Brand is having the best season of his career. He is currently 3rd in league scoring (29.1), 6th in rebounds (11.6), 2nd in blocks (4.0) and is shooting better than 50% from the field. He is also tied for a league best, 10.3 FT attempts per game. Quite simply, Brand has been dominant this season.
2 - Shaquille O'Neal (DET) -
Yes, Shaq has only played in 26 games this season, but his numbers have been so impressive, we had to rank him #2. Shaq is averaging 30 ppg and 12 rpg in 34 mins, but even more noteworthy is the fact that he is shooting a remarkable 56% from the floor. If he can stay healthy the rest of the way, he should play in enough games to make him a legit contender for MVP.
3 - Kobe Bryant (LAL) -
Another player having a standout season. Kobe has the Lakers chasing down top spot in the West and is making an impact across the board. He is tops in scoring at over 30ppg and is shooting better than 50% to boot. He is also pulling in 7 boards and dishing out 5 dimes per game. His defensive play has also been excellent, as he is averaging 2.3 steals and close to 1 block a night.
4 - Dirk Nowitzki (CHI) -
Always an MVP candidate. Dirk is second in league scoring and is grabbing 9 boards per contest. He is also playing solid on the defensive end, averaging a career best 1.7 blocks. His percentages are very good, but not quite good enough to rank him in the top 3 at the moment.
5 - Kevin Garnett (IND) -
With one Player of the Month award under his belt, Garnett is just doing what everyone expects him to do and that is to fill the stat sheet. His 12.7 boards per game are second best in the league and his 8.3 FT attempts are good enough to rank him in the top 10 in the league for that statistic. Garnett is also averaging career highs in blocks (2.4) and assists (4.6).
