1(3) - Luol Deng (POR) -
Arguably the most impressive rookie so far. He continues to lead all first year players in scoring, dropping an impressive 24.6 ppg. What is even more impressive is that his shooting percentages are improving. Deng is now shooting over 46% from the floor, and almost 39% from downtown. Even his FT shooting has been solid(75%). Defensively, Deng is still learning the ropes, but he continues to display a well rounded game, pulling in close to 7 boards and dishing out 3 assists per game.
2(1) - Jameer Nelson (MIL) -
After Nelson's hot start to the season, the Blazers decided to use him as bait to bring in a legitimate star player, something their team has been lacking for some time. As a result, Nelson is now a Milwaukee Buck and is showing that his great start to the season was no fluke. Nelson is currently shooting better than 50% from the floor, which is 7th best in the entire league among those with enough minutes played. He is also grabbing 5 boards and dishing out over 7 servings per night. Nelson continues to play like a top 5 pick rather than someone that was drafted out of the top 10.
3(2) - Jose Calderon (NOH) -
Continues to play well for the rebuilding Hornets. Recently, the team acquired more scoring punch in the forms of Al Harrington and Latrell Sprewell, in an attempt to challenge for a playoff spot this season. As a result, Calderon's assists should increase as both players are proven scorers. This should also lead to a reduction in shot attempts and scoring for Jose, but with the additional firepower, he should see more open looks which should help increase his shooting percentages. His FG% is still solid, but his 3pt shot seems to have left him in recent weeks.
4(4) - Andre Iguodala (UTA) -
Igoudala is now averaging 15 ppg, 6 rpg and just under 4 apg. He struggles from 3pt land, shooting under 30%, but has shown the ability to contribute in all aspects of the game. His passing ability and defense have been especially impressive to date. He appears to have the potential to become a legit lock down defender in time and possesses the vision and passing ability that can make teammates better. If his shooting improves, he could become an All star.
5(5) - Dwight Howard (BOS) -
Seems to be improving as the season wears on. He's close to averaging a double-double now with 16ppg and 9.7rpg. Most scouts thought that a major weakness coming into his rookie season was going to be his defensive play, but Howard is showing nice instincts around the hoop, swatting away 1.7 blocks per contest. He's also showing some quick hands, averaging 1 steal a night.
