In the beginning of the BBS league it was clear that the league had very much parity and the disparity between players was marginal. Coaches had to utilize their talent to the max in order to achieve max results from their players as there were only a handful of league standouts that we could truly call Superstars or Studs. Many players would play roles on teams that would prove them to be valuable in systems. It would be a challenge for coaches to find their scorers, their rebounders, their defenders, and their ball handlers. There would be few players that would posses multiple tools and even fewer that would excel in multiple tools.
In 2001 BBS had a draft class that completely exploded onto the scene that would change the whole face of the league. In 1999 BBS had their first amateur draft that produced one true superstar in Elton Brand. Shawn Marion and Andrei Kirilenko were considered to be just a notch below super stardom. The draft produced other talents as well here is a look at the top 10 from the 1999 draft.
1999 Inside Outside Handles Defense Rebound
Elton Brand A- C D+ A- B+
Shawn Marion B+ B C- A B+
Andrei Kirilenko B+ C C A- B+
Richard Hamilton C A- C B+ C-
Steve Francis B- B A B+ C
Jason Terry C- A B+ B- D+
Jamal Crawford C A C+ C D+
Andre Miller C+ C+ A- A- C-
Corey Maggette B- A- C B+ C
Wally Szczerbiak C A- C- C C+
The rest of the draft would produce some starters, key bench player, and some players that are still up and coming players. Overall the make shift of the league was not compromised as some players became franchise talents, some helped continue to help teams gets better as only 1 player would make an immediate impact on the face of the league and that being Brand.A year later there would be some highly touted college players coming out of the draft. Here is a look at the top 10 of the 2000 draft:
2000 Inside Outside Handles Defense Rebound
Baron Davis B+ A- A- A- D+
Ron Artest B A- C A+ B-
Tony Parker B- B A- A- C-
Michael Redd C+ A C B- D+
Lamar Odom B+ B- C+ A- C+

Manu Ginobili C+ A B A- C
Jamaal Magloire B+ D+ D C+ B
Mike Miller C+ B+ C+ C C-
Darius Miles B- C+ D+ A- C+
The 2000 draft was full of talent again it produced one immediate stud player in Baron Davis who is one of the top if not the top PG in BBS today. Ron Artest and Tony Parker are very comparable to the talent class of Shawn Marion and Andrei Kirilenko. You could also make the argument that Lamar Odom, Kenyon Martin, and Manu Ginobili are also in the same class range of talent. None of these players are #1 option players but are very great talents. Sometimes draft classes will produce some more of these players than other drafts. 2001 was a draft class that was supposed to be a lot of potential talent that could be great a few years down the line but we started to see a change in players abilities that would change the face of BBS. The 2001 class would produce talent from the start that wasn't even in the league. Dwayne Wade and Gilbert Arenas were the obvious top two picks but no one thought they would come into the league better than players such as Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter. Dwayne Wade would come into the league and would lead the Warriors to their first Championship in his rookie year. Not only were GA and Wade the only two studs in this draft class but Pau Gasol is on the same level as Elton Brand. The rest of the top 10 would fall into the stud category or that level just below.

Jason Richardson B A- C B C
Tyson Chandler B C- D+ A- A-
Zach Randolph B+ C- D+ C+ A-
Memo Okur B B- C B- B+
Eddy Curry B- C- C- A- B+
This draft is easily the biggest influx of talent the league has ever seen. The development of the younger talent has been quick and has been more prominent then any other draft class. In '99 and '00 players have been much slower to develop which started to raise some eye brows around the league. What made this class so different?
Steroids. This is the start of the steroid era in BBS. Notice the increase of handles in the off guards and every guard was at least a C- in rebounding. 3 of the top 10 scorers of the league are from the 2001 draft class including the leading scorer of the league Dwayne Wade. The MVP and Defensive Player of the Year are also from the 2001 draft class.
Part 2 of the article which will be featured tomorrow will take a look into the post 2001 draft class which is now known as the steroid era and look at the 2002,2003, and 2004 draft classes.
Part 3 which will be the following day we will take a closer look into Bestco the pharmaceutical company which is linked in the steroid scandal.
After the release of this trilogy of articles there might be some names released by the federal government linking players directly to Bestco.
