Welcome ladies and gentlemen to yet another edition of the BBS Hot Seat. Today we are joined by the GM of the newly crowned BBS champions, Garf.
Q:First off let me congratulate you on your first championship. You must feel ecstatic at the moment.
Yea it's a pretty cool feeling. I always had a competitive team in old BBS, but I never won a championship due to the Seattle Supersonics, and several amazing teams in the East. In the new BBS, I have been waiting for the year that I put a competitive team on the floor, and this was the first year I did so. I accumulated picks for several years, and drafted several great prospects with those picks. I knew however that I couldn't wait for these guys to develop, so I decided to trade some young guys and picks for Steve Nash and then traded some more young guys and picks for Amare Stoudemire. I'm hoping these moves will continue to allow me to be a championship contender for years to come.
Q:Let's talk about your team. Did you think you would be able to defeat the mighty Pistons once you made it to the finals? What are your plans going into the offseason and beyond? Do you think you can repeat?
To be honest I was completely shocked that I pulled it out. Before the series started, I thought I had somewhat of a chance because 'Zo had gotten injured in Eastern Conference Championship against the 76ers, so I knew the Pistons would be a man down for the first couple games of the series. Lo and behold in the third game of the series, after I tied the series up in the second game, Kobe Bryant, the best player to ever step on a basketball court, caught the Flu which would make him miss the next two games. Luckily for me, Webber had also gotten injured, which at least partially offset the Kobe injury. I ended up winning 2 in a row without Kobe, with Lamond Murray in my starting lineup and as my third option. After being up 3-1, and with Kobe coming back in Game Six, I finally grew confident that I would be able to pull it out, but of course, the Pistons tied the series up and pushed it to Game Seven. With our full lineups healthy, and the game being played in Detroit, I thought I was doomed, but somehow I won by 31 points, and sealed my first BBS championship.
As for the offseason, I'm not planning on doing much. I've put Kobe on the block just to see what kind of offers are out there, but the possibility of me trading him before next off-season are pretty slim. Besides that, I'm just hoping for a good TC for Amare and Diaw. In terms of repeating, my team will be the same as this years for the most part, and as I said earlier, hopefully Amare and Diaw can keep growing to make my team even stronger.
Q:The Denver Nuggets won the Lebron James sweepstakes besides James and Bosh do you think there will be any other players that can make a significant impact that came out this Draft?
I really don't. Emeka will be a great defensive player, but I'm just not quite sure if he has the offense to make him a top center in the league. I like T.J. Ford and Hinrich quite a bit, but neither are franchise players that can turn a team around.
Q:With the offseason here what teams do you think will improve next season and what teams may get worse?
Well, the 2002-03 season was the year of tanking, so obviously a lot of teams will have a lot of cap to spend in free agency. I see the Hornets making some big splashes since they don't have their pick in the next couple of years, and I can also imagine the Knicks trading for an impact shooting guard or small forward that has a large contract. A team consisting of Hinrich/FA or Trade/FA or Trade/Martin/Yao is a team that can contend for many years, in a strong Eastern Conference. Up in the air for me is the Pistons. Reilly is obviously the most respected GM in BBS, and after not winning a title a couple years in a row, he's either going to finally pick up that missing piece, or trade one or two of his stars for young guys or picks in the upcoming drafts. Same thing with the Bulls, the Bulls are going to have to figure out something they can do to gain on the Pacers, 76ers, and Pistons. I'm not sure who the tanking teams of 2004 will be, but my initial impressions will be the Blazers, the Nets, and once again, the Clippers. So look for these teams to continue to trade away any talent they have.
Q:Let's stray away from BBS. I recently asked pig what MAFMAF meant but he didn't really know. Can you tell us what the hell it means? lol
MAFMAF. One of the most controversial topics on BBS. MAFMAF was just a corny little group a few of us made one night in one of the BBS Roundtables. We pretty much bashed the GMs we didn't like at the time, nothing special. However, MAFMAF has returned, and has taken form in UOSL. Myself, Reilly, Krupinski, Bender, Scott, Haberman, and possibly Pig and Martinez, have rallied together to take down all of those NBN bitches who call themselves nWo. If you wanna take a look at the mayhem that is going on in UOSL look here: www.uosl2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1175495910&page=1
LOL Looks like a great rivalry over there. Who were the gm's that you bashed at the time? We must know!
Oh man, I don't know if I'm able to say, MAFMAF doesn't spill their secrets. But we pretty much ragged on everyone, whether it was JAHs away messages, Manas and the LOLs, or Lumley and his japanese cartoon porn collection.
Q:I believe you also might know BBS GM's personally. Any good stories to tell?
Well me and Reilly are cousins, and I've always considered him to be one of my best friends. Whenever our families get together funny stuff happens. The best story is probably when our greatgrandmother (she was probably 94 years old at the time) came upstairs to see what we were up to, and we responded that we were lighting our heads on fire. Of course, she didn't hear what we said, but she simply replied, "that sounds nice," walked away and went back downstairs.
Haha, Gotta love grandma
A coupe of months ago, Pig, Basone, Aaron, Mark, Reilly, Dave, and I went to two college basketball games at MSG. Actually meeting all of them was so funny, and talking to them now after meeting them and seeing what they're like in real life is hysterical. Pig sat at MSG spitting tobacco in one of those big oversized blue cups, Basone just talked trashed about everybody, and discussing whether Manas' name is pronounced Mon-Iss or Man-Iss was pretty funny, even though it is still a mystery to us.
Q:Who do you find the most annoying in the league and why?
To be honest, in the old BBS, I used to find you and Martinez the most annoying. I found you annoying just because it seemed we could never work out any of our damn deals! I found Martinez annoying just from that whole high school vs. college thread. Recently however, the two of you have become some of my favorite GMs, because of recent I have become more outspoken and more controversial. I think it's just more fun to pick fights with people and be obnoxious, so when the two of you post controversial or over-the-top comments, I appreciate it. The GMs that I find most annoying are usually just the GMs that are the most inactive, and they are usually the first to be fired, for example Maniac. Other than that, I've recently been fighting with JAH over in UOSL, but I don't have a problem with him here. It's hard to pick annoying GMs, but I can tell you some annoying things GMs do as a consolation. Everyone here knows Manas' trade tactics. He will never propose anything to you directly, and will require that you make the initial offer. It usually is "what would you want for _____", or "what would you give for ______", so that is sometimes frustrating. AIG not being on AIM and his time difference in the Philippines is sometimes annoying. The most annoying thing however in BBS, is the lack of activity during the drafts. I think a rule needs to be implemented to put a time limit on drafting and sending in lists.
Yeah, im surprised we even got a deal done. lol
I also agree with the time limit thing.
Q:If you had had to fire 3 people who would it be and why?
D2A, due to his inactivity.
Keelty, I just never see any posts by him.
Brad Miller, he's just too good it's unfair.
Q:Name your 5 best and worst gm's
In no order, I would say the best are:
Reilly - always a top team in the league
Spencer - unparalleled knowledge of the game
Krupinski - best with lineups
Duce - KG and Duncan is sick
and then either
Me - Patient, but made some moves when it mattered and I now have a core of Nash/Kobe/Diaw/Amare
You or DJ - lots of young talent, although it has been through tanking.
Andy - great duo in Dirk and Marbury
In no order, I would say the worst are:
Keelty - haven't seen a post by him in decades, and he seems like he has no interest in trading
Lumley - needs to choose a direction for more than 3 seasons
D2A - always a mediocre team
AIG - failed to give Odom a couple extra inches, which really bugs me cause I love Odom.
KG - His Twolves are just fucked.
Q:Any last thoughts?
MAFMAF 4 Life, Kobe is the greatest player in history (next to Brad Miller), and thanks for the opportunity.
Garf, you are now off the BBS Hot Seat.
