In this edition, we identify those players who are currently in the final year of their contracts that will command some serious coin this coming offseason.
At point guard, Steve Francis. Another obvious choice would have been Stephon "call me Starbury" Marbury, but considering he's already making 10+ mil per year, we'll go with Francis, who is just finishing up his rookie contract. Stevie "Franchise" is having a career year with the all of a sudden very competitive Atlanta Hawks franchise. The Hawks boast one of the better starting 5's in the entire league and also possess solid depth. Francis is among league leaders in assists per game and is shooting a ming boggling 49% from the field. Once thought to be a me-type player, Francis has bought into the team's philosophy and is focusing on making his teammates better rather than trying to get his own game off. The Hawks are winning, Francis is playing great and is just entering his prime, so yes, the Hawks have our permission to MAX HIM UP!
At shooting guard, Paul Pierce. There are quite a few talented 2 guards that could be hitting the FA market this coming offseason, but the Truth won't be one of them. The Wizards have compiled a talented team and Pierce is the main piece of the puzzle. He leads his team in scoring at a very efficient 21.5 ppg. Pierce isn't just a scorer, as he also plays strong defense and is also one of the better rebounding guards around. At 25, his game still has room to grow, but even if he doesn't he's worthy of a big pay day and thus, Washington will MAX HIM UP!
At small forward, Shawn Marion (Dirk is already making big money). The Spurs have a problem in that both Carter and Marion will be free agents this offseason and the team is only guaranteed to be able to keep one of them. While Marion doesn't have Carter's explosive and highlight real offensive ability, he is one of the most well rounded players in the game today. Not only does he score for you without dominating the ball, but he plays excellent defense (even if the stats don't show it), and is a contributor on the glass. Shawn isn't having his best season to date, but considering his age and overall ability, the answer to the question of who to re-up is simple; Shawn Marion, MAX HIM UP!
At power forward, Andrei Kirilenko. At 21, Ak47 is already in his 4th season a pro. The Raptors grabbed the Russian with the 3rd overall pick back in the 1999 draft and he has produced nicely for them. While he hasn't put up the most imposing statistics, he has shown a nice overall game and is seen as a strong complimentary piece at this point in his career. As stated, he contributes in all phases of the game and can play multiple positions on the floor. Considering his age and current ability, there will be plenty of interest in him should he hit the free agent market. Even though he may not be a true max player, you can't risk losing a talent like this, so the Raps will MAX HIM UP!
At center, Alonzo Mourning. The elder statesman of this list, Zo is still producing at 32 years of age. While he isn't the dominant force he once was he is still one of the best centers in the game today. His combination of low post scoring and shot blocking ability is rare and would draw plenty of interest during the offseason. Considering some of the contracts that have been handed out in recent BBS history, it wouldn't surprise us to see him land one last max deal. Although, it probably won't be for the 6 or 7 seasons he and his agent would like, Zo will still get paid this offseason. Even though he's on the other side of 30, he's still got game and will GET PAID!
