1. Golden State Warriors
The Warriors have quickly gone from worst to first 1st in the Western conference. Their transition has been successful in large part due to Dwyane Wade and the late season acquisition of Shawn Marion. Theo Ratliff has also been a valuable precence on the defensive end, since being traded from Atlanta. The only question is if they can sustain this for a 82 game period.
2. Utah Jazz
The Jazz, currently being lead by Vitaly Potapenko have been the surprise team thus far. Re-signing Al Harrington has been a huge plus for the team. The only issue so far this season, is the lack of production coming out of the #5 pick, Richard Jefferson.
3. Portland Trail Blazers
The Blazers so far seem to be the sleeper team of the west. They have a great core in Artest, Nash and Hughes, and the three of them should keep the Blazers a serious contender throughout the rest of the season.
4. Sacramento Kings
The Kings, the oldest team in BBS, are currently 10-4, but their point differential suggests their record could be better than they actually are. Charles Barkley continues to be a force in the post, and Glen Rice and Toni Kukoc provide very formidable scoring threats.
5. Dallas Mavericks
Although dependant on an older Mourning, they continue to play solidly and compete for a high playoff spot in the west. SAR continues to make Dallas's GM look like a genius with the solid numbers he is putting up. Rose continues to be a fine contributer as well.
6. Memphis Grizzlies
With solid defenders like Kandi and Cato, the Grizzlies are currently 3rd in the league in points allowed per game. Although they don't have one dominant scorer, they have 5 players over 10 points per game.
7. Los Angeles Clippers
The Admiral David Robinson and Tony Battie form a very nice defensive threat in the post. Latrell Spreewell has been a saving grace for the team, averaging over 27 points a game, and Sam Cassell continues to play phenomenally. This team will go as far as its bench will take them.
8. Denver Nuggets
Averaging 20 points and 8 rebounds per game, it appears as if Antawn Jamison's contract will be worth every penny. The Nuggets recently gave up hope on Quentin Richardson, as they spun him off for two future first round picks.
9. San Antonio Spurs
So far, it seems like Chauncey Billups has been the biggest disappointment for the Spurs thus far. It also seems as if the Spurs came away with the steal of the draft in Memo Okur, who is averaging almost 15 points per game, in limited minutes.
10. Los Angeles Lakers
One of the bigger disappointments in the West so far, the Lakers have been making a ton of moves in the first few days of the season. Kobe has been putting up incredible numbers, and is hoping the youngsters around him will soon follow suit.
11. Seattle Sonics
Trading away Danny Fortson has lost them a huge presence on the inside. However, Rasheed Wallace and Udonis Haslem are attempting to make up for the loss.
12. Phoenix Suns
Some of the previous trades made by the Suns GM, just simply make you scratch your head. The Suns are going nowhere, and nowhere fast.
13. Minnesota Timberwolves
Minnesota doesn't have a single player averaging more than 13 points per game. When that is the case, it should come to no surprise that they've only won 2 games.
14. Houston Rockets
Injuries have killed the Rockets in the early stage this season. Lamar Odom has been lost for practically the entire year, with a devestating achilles injury. On thr bright side, the Odom injury may result in a high draft pick for the 2002 draft.
