BBS 2000 Final Mock Draft
BBS Senior Writer Galo Pesantes
1- San Antonio Spurs- Baron Davis | PG | UCLA
The Spurs start a heralded backcourt spearheaded by Baron Davis and Vince Carter for many years to come. Desmond Mason also adds a dimension to an already explosive and athletic team with Davis and Carter on board. With some key free agent signings, the Spurs could be rolling in wins in two seasons or less.
2- Portland Trail Blazers- Tony Parker | PG | France
Point guards like Tony Parker don’t come around very often so I do not believe GM Dan Basone will pass the French man up. He is ultra quick and elusive off the dribble and can find the options on the floor to score. Parker is also an upgrade on current guards Rusty LaRue and Larry Hughes. Look for Parker and Hughes to be another nice tandem in the backcourt.
3- Memphis Grizzlies- Ron Artest | SF | St. John’s
According to one General Manager, if Tony Parker is already taken, the Grizz will go with St. John’s star, Ron Artest. The Grizzlies could then shift Hill to his natural three spot and let Artest take the reigns at shooting guard. Knight at the point guard already packs a nice defensive punch along with Artest and Hill should be scary.
4- Toronto Raptors- Michael Redd | SG | Ohio State
The Canadian team adds another scorer to a roster that features T-Mac and AK-47 and should be an explosive scorer from the get goes. Redd is surely not the Raptors first choice in picking and quite possibly forces Kirilenko to play some power forward. But, it still is an interesting pick at number four in this draft.
5- Houston Rockets- Lamar Odom | SF | Cincinnati
With the best point guards taken already, Houston has to go with the next best player available and that is Lamar Odom. He plays like a point guard so he should not be a problem in getting others the ball plus playing defense and rebounding. Could also be a viable big man with swingmen Rashard Lewis and Corey Maggette on the team as well
6- Philadelphia 76ers- Manu Ginobilli | SG | Argentina
The Sixers spend the sixth pick on the dynamic scorer from Argentina who should be able to compliment Marbury in the backcourt. Marion and Illgauskas should be able to rebound anything missed between the pair of Marbury and Ginobilli. Overall, Ginobilli gives the Sixers another scorer they need and then some.
7- Chicago Bulls- Darius Miles | SF | East St. Louis High School
The hometown Bulls takes this Chi-town product at the lucky number seven hole and hope to see some strides of improvement soon. Miles is an athletic swingman the Bulls will need when EB is doubled down low. Still, the Bulls are still busy on the phone lines trying to get a deal done where they land in the top five.
8- Portland Trail Blazers- Kenyon Martin | PF | Cincinnati
Blazers get size up more with this pick, as Martin should start from day one in Portland. Neither Todd McCollough nor Keith Closs match up to Martin offensively and eventually defensively. Martin could be a viable option for the Blazers by year three of his development.
9- Chicago Bulls- Stromile Swift | PF | LSU
Unless a deal is made where this pick is moved, the Bulls are taking Swift at number nine say sources close to the Bulls. Swift is simply an athletic specimen with high energy but very little offensive game. With some development, the Bulls could make him a nice big man to get the pressure off Elton Brand in the paint.
10- Golden State Warriors- Jamal Magloire | C | Kentucky
Could go a number of different ways with this pick since the Warriors have so many needs, but they take the big man from Kentucky with the 10th pick. The Warriors should be able to develop Magloire to be a dependable big man. With some fine tuning, he could be a double double type player by his fourth year in the league.
11- Denver Nuggets- Quentin Richardson | SG | DePaul
Surely, Q will be a much more dependable scorer than Troy Hudson his heir apparent. The Nuggets also add another nice shooter to help Nick Van Exel in the back court and Antawn Jamison in the front court. Richardson should also help a team that ranked dead last in three point shooting percentage last season.
12- Phoenix Suns- Mike Miller | SG | Florida
Miller could be a nice replacement for Brent Barry once his contract is up or could rotate with Finley and Barry. A nice shooter with not much of a defensive game to speak up but can certainly help percentages. Suns management has to take the best player available here and it is Miller.
13- Cleveland Cavaliers- DerMarr Johnson | SF | Cincinnati
The Cavs take a chance here with the last pick of the lottery with another Cincy product in DerMarr Johnson. Little is known about Johnson, but he has nice outside touch and a tremendous upside. Look for Johnson to take the lead if Stackhouse or Robinson miss any time this season due to injuries.
