I completely stole everything about DJ's mock, but I was very bored watching this King/Laker game and came up with this, thanks DJ!
1 - Portland Trailblazers – SG/SF Ron Artest
- Most GMs expect Basone to go with Baron Davis, but with the recent play of Rusty LaRue, filling the SF spot with Artest, a shut down defender, gives the Blazers two amazing defenders at the 2/3 position. Ron Artest is a 18 ppg scorer, while limiting his opponent. Davis may have the hype, but Artest is going to be the prize of this draft.
2 - San Antonio Spurs - PG Baron Davis
- Though most GMs expect him to go number one, Davis, in this writer’s opinion, is the second best player in this draft. Davis will give the Spurs a much needed floor general, and give the high flying Vince Carter a nice running mate to build around. His ratings indicate he should be a top three point guard from day one, which will greatly help San Antonio.
3 - Toronto Raptors – PG Tony Parker
- Though DJ would prefer Davis, Parker isn’t a bad parting gift. Parker’s ability to penetrate and open the floor for the likes of Tracy McGrady will pay dividends in the future. Odom is also a very interesting player at this spot, which would create a large, athletic lineup with TMac/Odom/AK, but prize point guards are difficult to pass up.
4 - Houston Rockets – SF/PF Lamar Odom
- Lamar Odom, along with Corey Maggette and Rashard Lewis give the Rockets an extremely athletic 2/3/4 to build around. The Rockets will, once again, be in the running for the lottery next year, but the young nucleus is a fine starting point for the current, or future GM.
5 - Memphis Grizzlies - SG Michael Redd
- With the exception of Grant Hill and Brevin Knight, the Grizzlies don’t have many pieces to build around. At this spot, the Grizz must take the best player available, which translates to Michael Redd. Redd’s deadly outside shot will be enhanced with Hill’s strong penetration and Knight’s passing ability. Though Redd can stroke it, it won’t propel the Grizz to a playoff seed the following year.
6 - Chicago Bulls – SG/SF Manu Ginobli
- Though Krupinski would probably prefer Michael Redd, Manu is not far off. Krupinski attempts many different scenarios with his DC, and Manu gives Krupinski the ability to experiment even more. Ginobli can play, both, the 2 and 3 affectively. Manu also has a deadly outside shot which will complement Elton Brand’s dominant inside game very well.
7 - Philadelphia 76ers – PF Kenyon Martin
- The 1, 3, and 5 are filled for the 76ers, as they are clearly building through the draft. This pick will help fill the 4, as Kenyon Martin gives the Sixers a nasty low post player to complement the finesse Big Z. Martin’s defense, along with Marion, also solidifies this young squad’s defense for the next eight to ten seasons. Though they still need a big time scorer, the Sixers are on the right track.
8 - Atlanta Hawks – SG/SF Quentin Richardson
- Q is the best player that fits what Bender needs, a player to replace Isiah Rider. Although I believe this pick should be dealt, since Francis does not strike me as a true point guard, Q can give them some offensive fire power from the outside. Q can backup the 2 and 3, until he is ready to take over as a full time starter.
9 - Phoenix Suns – C Jamal Maglorie
- Much like the Sixers, the Suns are in a similar situation, having three out of the five positions filled by very nice players. The 2 and 5 need to be filled and Maglorie fits the bill. Maglorie will be a solid complement to Chris Webber as he will do the dirty work.
10 - Seattle Sonics – PF Stromile Swift
- The Sonics, though extremely young, already have their starting lineup filled with a great, young core. The Sonics have the luxury of being able to draft the best player on the board, and Swift falls to them at 10. Swift’s freakish athletic ability will be a great addition to the Sonic bench.
BBS Rumblings
There has been talk that the Los Angeles Clippers have been quietly shopping the top point guard in the league, Jason Kidd. Though general manager and BBS senior staff writer Galo refuses comment, it has been rumored he is looking for two young studs plus picks.
The Minnesota Timberwolves and Atlanta Hawks are in active talks to bring Shareef Abdur-Rahim to the twin cities. A number of picks will be going back to Atlanta. One has to ask, will those picks be worth anything with a Rahim/Zo frontcourt for the next five years.
Chicago Bull Donyell Marshall has been shopped to a number of playoff teams, for two first round draft picks. Though Marshall may help some teams, two draft picks for a decent backup player who, most likely, will not develop anymore has been too steep for most GM’s.
New York Knicks GM, Outlawz, is breaking up one of the top teams in the East and Latrell Spreewell is the hot commodity at the deadline. A number of teams have inquired about the 29 year old. The Hawks, Jazz, and Hornets are the leading candidates, but rumor has it that an unknown team may pop up at the deadline.
