Dallas Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks traded away their first round pick to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for the loud mouth Rasheed Wallace and Malik Rose. The Mavs pick turned up seven which could have landed them Andre Miller or Jamal Crawford. The Mavs also don’t have a pick this upcoming season which shouldn’t be as much of a problem but still a first is a first. The won’t see too much Profit out of their 2nd round selection either
Overall Draft Grade: D+
Denver Nuggets
So the Nuggets felt that it was very vital to their organization to add Nick Van Exel to their franchise to be the third PG who is under the age of 30 to be on their roster. In order to do so they gave up two draft picks while there are two A potential PG’s now sitting behind him on the depth chart. It’s a good thing NVE led them to the 8th playoff spot also known as a mediocre team. Kenny Thomas/James Posey/Jonathon Bender, John Wallace, Ike Austin, and 2003 draft pick is looking better right now.
Overall Draft Grade: D
Houston Rockets
The Rockets quietly had themselves a very nice draft. First acquiring 19 yr old Corey Maggette gives them another electrifying young player. Maggette and Lewis will be fun to watch for a long time. Kenny Thomas is a great young rebounder which is vital for this team so he can grab the boards and outlet it for a run and gun offense. Anderson, Kittles, Maggette, Lewis, and even Vin Baker at the 5 can get up and down the court. This is a very fun, young, and exciting team that is only going to get better as the years go by.
Overall Draft Grade: A-
Minnesota Timberwolves
Traded away their first round pick for Alonzo Mourning and he didn’t deliver the ring. The future looks dark in Minnesota as there is talks of Stockton, Robinson, and Dream all hanging it up at the season’s end.
Overall Draft Grade: F
San Antonio Spurs
Coaches hope that Chauncey with 1 yr under his belt can improve play and really run the offense that the Spurs are looking to run. It’s quite evident that the Spurs are looking for an athletic team with Chauncey Billups, Vince Carter in the back court drafting Desmond Mason makes perfect sense for this spurs team. Who are we kidding though? This was no genius pick as it was quite obvious Mason was falling in San Antonio all along but either way management saved their job with this pick but for how long??
Overall Draft Grade: B+
Utah Jazz
The Jazz made great strides in developing their franchise in drafting Jason “The Jet” Terry. Terry provides athletic PG play with the ability to run up and down the court while shooting the ball at a high%. The Jazz also had another first round pick that is questionable in Gordon Giricek. There is no doubt that Giricek is a solid player coming over from Europe but with a team that already consists of Anthony Peeler, David Wesley, Ron Mercer, and Jalen Rose where does a player like Giricek fit in? Players like Giricek could be found in early to even late second round. The Jazz could have really used a big fella such as Wang Zhi-Zhi, Even Eschmeyer, Francisco Elon, or even taken on a great potential project in DeAndre Hulett but they didn’t. Redeeming themselves they made a nice second round selection in Jermaine Jackson to provide a tough nosed backup for Terry.
Overall Draft Grade: B-
Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies fell into a category every coach hates to be in….mediocrity. They fell to the 15th overall selection to land themselves a promising young player, James Posey. Posey is in a great environment because he does not need to start right away and can benefit from backing up defensive gem Doug Christie and is surrounded by great shooters such as Dale Ellis, Wesley Person, and Ray Allen. Posey will also benefit from the pass first PG Brevin Knight.
