NBA might penalize players for flopping
Scott Soshnick Bloomberg News Jan. 25, 2007 01:07 PM
National Basketball Association players who fake fouls might soon be penalized themselves, a league official said.
The NBA is studying how often feigned fouls, known as "flops," occur and whether officials can consistently tell the difference between actual fouls and embellishments, said Stu Jackson, the executive vice president for basketball operations.
"They're really difficult to determine in real time. They're meant to fool an official," Jackson told reporters today. "Are we going to be wrong more times than not? It's tough, but we're looking at it." advertisement
FIBA, the governing body for international basketball, allows referees to impose a technical foul for flopping, a penalty that Jackson said the NBA is considering. Other sports, including soccer and hockey, also allow officials to penalize players who embellish fouls.
"We have so many more plays than you do in a football or soccer game and in a more intimate environment," said Jackson, who didn't offer a timetable for a decision.
Jackson met with reporters in New York to discuss the league's officiating program.
about time...

gay....how do you determine a flop When you exagerate contact, i.e. a simple hand on the back, yet the player goes sprawling 5 feet onto the floor like he just got pushed with full force. Sure, it's going to be a judgement call more than anything else, but alot of these flops are just flat out blatant. If Soccer can do it, so can basketball.

When a player (See: Manu, Noci, Bell, RIP) get touched and go flying like they got shot out of cannon. Rip?? RIP flopped big time during the Knicks/Pistons game in MSG. I don't really watch Pistons games so I don't know how often he does it but it got annoying watching him do it then.

The fucker got Stephon his sixth foul on a huge flop. I think a ref should be held accountable for calling something like a charge the wrong way, as opposed to penalizing the player. That's nonsense. But a move like Rip's was nonsense; that's the kind of move the league should come down on.

I hate moves like that, except when it fouls out the team's best player, but I completely understand. At least you guys won!

The ref's perspective in 'game-time' time is a whole lot different than that of our see it again and again on "replay" time. Which is why coming down on the player not the ref is the reasonable thing to do.

I don't know enough about refereeing games to give a strong opinion, but there are a number of horrible calls made at games, that I've attended, in which everyone in the entire arena witnessed, with the exception of the refs.
Refs definitely miss plenty of calls, and that may be apart of the game, but if there's a way to keep refs accountable, I'd love to see the league implement this rule.
Does anyone think the age of refs have something to do with some problems?
Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing what the league can do to help fix any problem, including this.

I hate flops. I also hate the charge. I absolutely hate players running across the lane to jump in front of an offense player to get a charge. I also hate when 7 footers sit in the lane and try and draw a charge. Go up for the block, dont set your feet and stand still.

It's impossible to make a rule on flopping because like Bender said it's a judgment call and it's very difficult to for a ref to determine a flop because there's so much going on in a NBA game and the speed of the game also makes it very difficult.

players have been getting cards for a long time in soccer for taking dives (mostly in the box trying to get a PK)... I don't know if this is a good idea for basketball
for it to work right you would have to have some no calls which would cause a lot of controversy based on the contact and no call
Good idea to try but I don't see it causing anything but problems

the refs need to focus on the nocioni's of the world and bucle down on them so they don't continue to flop, then the problem will be solved.

Sources say he is on this ice in Tinseltown and is likely to be fired within the week. Here is a picture of Jeremy at the latest GM meetings in Las Vegas. A close source to the BBS League Office said that while in Vegas Jeremy solicited the company of a "Woman of the night" but just wanted to play Harry Potter Trivial Pursuit all night.
