Nothing to do with basketball but the question rises. Does this now put the MLS and American Soccer on the map? The MLS has been a drag its 10 odd seasons but now do people start coming to games now a great like Beckham is here. I sure do want to go see him play. Thoughts

I think he'll have an effect but not as much to take the country or the game by storm. Women love him so maybe it will go up in that category but a real footballer needs to come to take the US into the soccer age. And the only player I think can do it is Ronaldinho of Brazil who currently plays for Barcelona.

Beckham is quite the icon...and he'll probably do some good for MLS. But I don't see him ever earning all that money...a 31 y/o midfielder can't have that much more gs in his legs.

I am excited for the league. I really enjoy watching the World Cup and would enjoy the MLS if it became big. I'm hoping for the floodgates to open and start attracting more big time players.
On a side note, if you're a soccer fan, or even a sports fan in general, pick up "Once in a Lifetime, Story of the New York Cosomos." It's such a great documentary.

First off, David Beckham is one of the most overrated athletes in ALL of sports. His fame is based more on advertising, "connections", and looks more so than his athletic ability. Sure, the guy is undoubtedly one of the best crossers/passers/place kickers in the history of soccer, but that's where his talent ends, and why he is NOT worth the money he gets.
He's not a leader, can't dribble, and folds under pressure. There is a reason why he is no longer England's capitain, and why Real Madrid wanted to get rid of him. He's only coming to America because he now has full ownership of his imaging rights when Real Madrid would not give it up entirely.
He's riding pine on Real Madrid, argueably the best club in the world, and named best club of the 20th century, that should say something.

First off, David Beckham is one of the most overrated athletes in ALL of sports. Yes. Unfortunately I havent watched all that much football over the past decade but from I did see, he was a guy that was really good at a few things and not all that great anywhere else. Good crosser, good at free kicks and corners... but after that, not all that special. Anyone ever actually watch him play D?

No not in a million years. Is he worth the money for the MLS is the question though. The amount of money in this deal is put in place because the declining MLS hopes that his presence can bring in profit and more talent, everyone knows David Beckham he might not be the greatest soccer player in the world but like you said he is the most publicly known. It's a publicity stunt for an organization who is riding on pine and only time will tell if it works out.

Will shirt sells break MLS records? Of course. Will games be sold out? Sure. With Beckham coming to the MLS is it the start of the growth of a league that compares to the LFP(Spanish League), English Premier, or Bundesliga? I don't think so. Fans of, I hate to say, "real" soccer usually are NOT fans of MLS and usually strongly dislike Beckham. In my opinion, I think you need an abundance of avid fans to make a league run. Not bring in a player that's going to sell you t-shirts and sell out game, for maybe a season or two.

Beckham will instantly be one of the top players in the league. The group that owns the LA Galaxy owns other MLS teams so I'm guessing they think this is going to help out increase sales for all of their teams.
I've played soccer all of my life. If you don't know much about soccer I can tell you MLS is pretty terrible. It doesn't come close to comparing to any big league in talent or quality of play. One player isn't going to change that and this isn't going to bring over a mass of other players over. I'd say some players will come but the market isn't there for anyone that could be considered a good player. No great player in his prime is going to make the move to the US because the talent isn't even close to being there.
