Pistons trade: Shaq Pistons '09 First 1 upgrade by 2008
Celtics trade: Bender Thomas Hermann Bynum
Deal goes through the first day of the offseason.
The two of us have been talking throughout the year about a potential Shaq deal. Kris knows the value of guys like Shaq, even at his age, and feels he has a contender next year.
We came up with a deal that allows me to keep Shaq for the rest of the season, then ship him out after our run. Originally, the deal was Mashburn/Bynum for Shaq, but we agreed to take Mash out of the deal and add the pick/upgrade if we do it next year.
Shaq has been a stud. One of the top players in the league; but it's time to move on and start building around LBJ/Darko/Artest.
Thanks for the deal and good luck next year.

Shaq Pistons '09 First 1 upgrade by 2008
Celtics trade:

Celtics agree.
I went back and forth on this for quite a while, for a number of reasons. But bascially it all boiled down to this for me:
Am I willing to trade for Shaq while keeping my 4 best players (Dwight, Josh, Mashburn, Papaloukas)?
When I thought about it simply like that, it seems like a hard deal to pass up.
Obviously, there are risks, as there are with any major trade. In this case, clearly it's the risk of Bynum blossoming and becoming the next big time Center. I'm pretty comfortable in saying I don't think he'll ever be at the level Shaq is currently at, scoring 30ppg for one of the league's best and deepest teams.
And yes, Shaq will probably see some slight decline in his skills in the final 3 years of the contract, but he's still a top 5 Center for the life of the contract, I think.
The other risk is losing Josh Howard in Free Agency. Hopefully he sticks around, cuz that will throw a wrench in things if he leaves. But we'll still have a lotto pick and FA to potentially fill that hole. ANd Mashburn/Dwight/Shaq is one of the league's better trios next year.
We do get older, but I think we get better.

Only give up Bynum. Surprised the Pistons did this but i guess they do it because they get to keep shaq and ship him off when he's 34. Not a great deal by either team but not bad either.
