Welcome to the first edition of the BBS Hot Seat for the new season. Joining me today is Hornets GM Nova, Pacers GM Duce and Warriors GM James. Welcome all.
Nova = Purple
Duce = Green
James = Orange
The most talented team in the league is quite clearly the Chicago Bulls. Whos next and why? Can they match up with the Bulls come a 7 game playoff series?
Nova - The Knicks. They have 4 incredible players in Parker, Richardson, Ming, & Dalembert. Parker is without a doubt the best PG in the league, and Yao is without a doubt the best C in the league. Meanwhile, Samuel Dalembert is arguably a top 5 PF in the league. He puts up 16.3ppg, 10.9rpg, and 3.9bpg on very good %'s. Next, they have Jason Richardson whose an extremely talented scorer who is extremely efficient. I do think they can match up with the Bulls in a 7 game series. They may not beat them with Battier at SF, but if they can upgrade the SF position, I definitely think they could beat Chicago.
Duce - I'd go with the Warriors for the fact that they have Kobe and Timmy. They can beat Chicago, I like the Bulls but they're not invincible. I could see them losing in round 2, 3 or 4 even though they shouldn't
James - The Knicks. Yao, J-Rich and Parker is just as good as good as Chicago's big three. They match them everywhere on the court and are far more dominant at the PG and C positions. They have Dalembert to hold Brand and newly acquired Shane Battier to apply at least some defensive pressure on Dirk Nowitzki. I can also see my Warriors giving them a tough time now with the recent pick up of Tim Duncan.
If you were the Celtics GM for a day, what would you do? Would you make some moves or hold still with their current squad?
Nova - I would trade Shaq for some youth. They never should have traded for him. They had a great young youth movement going with Bynum & The Howards. Now, their a team in transition. They have two aging all-star caliber players in Mashburn & Shaq, and they have two good young players in Josh & Dwight Howard. I would trade Shaq & Theo and go young.
Duce - I would probably begin to rebuild, trade Shaq, Theo, Mashburn and even Josh Howard for what I can and build around Dwight. I know that's not what they're going to do but if I had only one day I'd have no choice.
James - I'd make a decision. I'd decide weather I want to rebuild or go for a championship. If I'm rebuilding, I deal Shaq now whilst he still has value. I deal Mashburn now too because he will most likely decline very quickly. If I contend, I trade Shaq to a team like Detroit or any team with more valuable long term talent. I keep Howard and Mashburn and trade my picks and cap fillers for role players.
Should Bender have been fired for going over the hard cap which put his Hawks in a terribly bad position?
Nova - No. Bender made a stupid mistake, but he is going to suffer the consequences. I admire him for owning up to it and saying he will stay around and try and fix it. I believe in second chances and am happy he was not fired
Duce - No, I don't think so. I don't know what I would have done but I support the fact that he has guidelines to uphold now and that he paid the penalty for going over.
James - Yes and no. In real life, he would have been fired in a heart beat. Because he volunteered to remain at the Hawks under the strict punishment he recieved, I see him as worth of his job.
Memphis received some new blood this off season in the form of a new GM. The new GM hasn’t really given way to a new direction or team. Does Hype deserve to keep his job?
Nova - For now, yes. Hype has made a trade, and while he hasn't done as much as he ccould have, he took over a team that was/is in the shitter, and I think he deserves some more time to try and turn them around. So, yeah, he should stay, but keep him on a short leash
Duce - Yeah, you have to give him more than one season considering the shape of that team. I'm not really that impressed with Hype as a GM but to expect somebody to turn that team around by day 60 as some have is a bit overboard in my view.
James - The team needs changes now. They don't need them next year, they need them now. Memphis really needs a GM to come in and take control of them which has not been done under Hype. Hype is a great GM, yet hasnt shown it yet in the BBS. Hopefully he begins to in the coming weeks.
Who would you prefer on your team as a cornerstone player and why. Chris Paul or LeBron James?
Nova - No-brainer for me. Chris Paul. He's only in his second season and he's already an elite PG. He has the potential to be a Baron Davis type PG. Meanwhile, even though LBJ is a very good young player,his development has been a little slower then expected. He has been RC'd 3 times, has had 4 TC's, and is not a good defender. He could end up being a great player, but unless he ends up drastically improving his defense, he will never be a true superstar, whereas, Paul looks like he'll easily be the best PG in the league within three seasons.
Duce - Chris Paul. I agree with Reilly in that the point guard is the way to go.
James - Chris Paul, easily. LeBron isn't much, Paul is a stud. Why he was traded is beyond me. I'd chose Paul over LeBron 10 times out of 10 times. I see him dominating the BBS in 2-3 years.
Talking about LeBron James, does his value come from his name or from his ratings and potential? 3 camps and only B A- C+ B- C+ B ratings do suggest it all comes from his name. Do you agree?
Nova - It comes from his name, no doubt about it. He's a good all-around player, and he'll be a great scorer, but his defense is weak and I'd be surprised if he ever ends up being more then a B defender, maybe B+. Some GM's treat him like he's the best young player in the league just because of his name, whereas I see several other young players I would rather have; ie, Marvin Williams, Luol Deng, Chris Paul, etc.
Duce - His value comes from his name. The only thing I don't understand is why people don't believe that is justified. I understand everyone is merely a text name and ratings but look at his stats, look at his age, and look at the fact that he's C+ or higher in everything. I think those things prove he's an awesome player and if he does get better, Lumley is going to be running shit in Sacto. Did everyone forget that Kobe Bryant once had lower ratings?
James - I believe Lums reasoning behind the Paul trade was "because its James". There is your answer right there. If his name was Richard Jefferson, he would never in a million years have gone for Chris Paul. I understand that he will improve, but he is not worth Paul or anyone of his caliber.
Where do Washington go from here? They have just begun rebuilding, what should be their next move?
Nova - First off, they should not have dealt their 1st for FA-to-be TJ Ford. They could have dealt off Pierce & Walker, and probably have gotten a top 5 1st. If they lose Ford in Free Agency, they will have lost their 1st for nothing essentially. Now, since they don't have their 1st, they should try to get an upgrade at Center. They need an inside scoring presence if they want to have a shot to make some noise.
Duce - Trade Walker and Pierce for youth and picks. Pretty easy to see why, it's just the way you want to go if you're rebuilding.
James - I firstly would not have dealt my 07 first for TJ Ford. Secondly, I begin by dealing Pierce for straight expirings and maybe some RC's and late firsts because thats all I think you can get for him. I then deal Walker to a contender for more cap relief and begin taking the Sixers route.
Fire 2 BBS GM’s and give reasons for both.
Nova - Eh. Only one GM really deserves to be fired IMO, and that's manas. He did nothing in Free Agency, has not been around much at all the last month or so, and his team really lacks a true direction. He needs to go. As for the second, if I had to pick, I guess it'd be Hype. Even though I don't think he should be fired, the GM's in BBS are excellent, and so by default, it'd be him simply because he hasn't done as much as he should have.
Duce - Nope.
James - Manas first of all. Have barely seen him around the boards. Then Hype if I have to. Obviously I wouldnt now because he needs more time, but like Nova said, it came down to a process of elimination.
Which player in the BBS is your personal favourite and why?
Nova - Luol Deng. The kid is ridiculous. A- B+ C A B A ratings at age 21 is just nuts. He's only in his third season, so he could realistically end up A- A- C+ A B+ A which would be downright dirty. He is such a great all-around player, and if I had to pick one team to start a team with, it would be him.
Duce - I absolutely love Tony Parker. I think he's the best true PG in the league and has been for quite some time. You can do everything with him on your team and he hasn't even received RC treatment.
James - Probably Chris Paul. So young, so talented and ready to lead a team into the playoffs. I'd send Aaron $5 AUD via PayPal for him believe it or not. Not really, no wait, I probably would.
Do you agree with the dismantlement of the Indiana Pacers? Should Duce have kept his team together for one last hurrah?
Nova - Yes, I agree with it. The Duncan injury really hurt, and I don't believe his team could have competed with the Bulls & Knicks. Duce's trades have all been solid, and the package he got for Baron Davis was downright awesome. This could be one of the quicker rebuilds the BBS has seen as the team looks like it could be a competitor again by the 08-09 season.
Duce - No. Duce sucks. Fire him.
James - Yes, he chose to do it at the right time and got excellent value for Baron Davis. They already look to be competing with the LA's and Detroits of the league for best young team.
If you were Spence and could cripple one player in the BBS for 200 days (like he did to me with Baron and Kobe), who would it be and why?
Nova - Baron Davis. Just because it would be funny to see him get hurt for a long time right after Aaron acquired him.
Duce - I'd cripple Gerald Green. He's not fat enough to be in Philadelphia.
James - Gerald Green or Rudy Gay so that Andy can STFU.
And finally, should Andy STFU one and for all?
Nova - STFU
Duce - STFU
James - STFU
