Like 5 teams offered more total money then the Mavs. I've seen similarities to this many times in baseball sims. I dont know if they use same criteria or not but sometimes real young guys like Dally will take good salary shorter deal over longer deals so they will be eligible to hit FA sooner while they are still young. I'm not familiar enuf with FBB to know if thats a factor but this wouldnt be that unusual in baseball sims. And sometimes it's just a random signing, who knows. I'm kinda happy about it tho I dont like the FBB FA system. I think there are too many unknown variables. I think some kind of in season bidding system would be nice. Also just knowing if personality and preference comes into play with the decision making. Does playing time play a role in the process? I guess just knowing what each players priorities are would be nice. That way you could better understand it, or try to make the player happy.

Playing time has absolutely no effect on it.
Players will go for the shorter deal if there's a substantial amount of more money per year in it.
A player would take 3 years 40 mill over 5 years 50 mill.
A player would take 3 years 45 mill over 6 years 60 mill.
The only time years really come into effect is when it's about bird years, or if the same money is being offered by both teams, just 1 team is offering more years.
As for the in-season thing, I know I'm new and have no say at all, but I would be completely against this idea....it does not work well, because all the good FA's end up being re-signed in-season, and the rebuilding teams will never even have a chance to sign a star in FA. In FBB, the chances of signing away a young star are not great, but there is still the chance of it, and there are usually some good players who test FA.
If we inputted an in-season extension rule, the FA pool would be horrible, and it would really hurt the balance of the league.
FBB is somewhat random which sucks, and sometimes there are no explanations for a player choosing to sign for less money, but most of the time, you can find a reason why a player signs with a certain team...whether it be hometown, greed/loyalty(doesnt play a huge role though), years offered, money per year, etc.

We already have an in season extension rule. i was speaking of a game based extension rule, where there would be conversation between the impending FA and the GM.
