Bored at work with limited/no internet. Sorry.
The BBS
After assisting in Minnesota for little over a month and being hired by Golden State as General Manager almost immediately afterwards, the time I have spent in the BBS to date has been enough for me to form opinions and make judgements on both the league and it’s GM’s.
Coming from the legendary and almost unparalleled NBN sim league, my expectations and hopes for my time in the BBS were not nearly as high as those I had when entering the legacy filled Nuthin’ But Net sim league some two years ago.
GM quality above all is what made the NBN so special. Combine that with an articulate and intelligent commissioner, superb draft files and an expiry date being almost un-imaginable, the NBN was the ‘perfect’ league. It did have it’s set backs though, including cheating accusations, limited spurts of inactivity and the current constant change of control in the leagues front office, however over all, the NBN was an amazing sim league.
As mentioned above, my expectations of the BBS were not quite as high. After being involved in FBB sim leagues for almost 4 years now, I have been apart of and controlled many leagues, seen great GM’s come and go and watched potentially brilliant leagues collapse right in front of my very eyes.
At 19 years of age and with 4 years of experience under my belt, I can safely say that the BBS is not only the best league I have ever been apart of, however the most enjoyable too. The competitive and somewhat ‘intellectual’ nature which fills the boards is unmatched. The leagues GM’s are of the highest quality and the league commissioner is one of the most consistent and well organised ones that I have ever managed under.
Realistic draft files which are seemingly unpredictable for a retro sim league make the BBS incredibly unique. However, GM commitment and activity above all make the BBS the pinnacle of current sim leagues.
The only gripe that I can see in the BBS is the gap between the elite teams of the league (see Chicago, Detroit) and the leagues weaker teams. Controlled by the best GM’s in the league, the top 5-6 teams who have consistently been winners and only look like continuing are leaps and bounds ahead of teams (see Memphis, Minnesota) who have been mediocre for years and have no real direction to speak of.
Replacing those teams that lack future movement with new, experienced GM’s or simply relocating an active current one may cure the problem. With the leagues best point guard (Ginobili) and the BBS’ two best forwards on the same team (Nowitzki and Brand in Chicago), with Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett in Indiana and Dwyane Wade and Gilbert Arenas forming the leagues best back court in Toronto, the balance of power in the BBS has never been more unjust.
Discussions have arisen regarding the state of teams and it looks as if the leagues founder may be moving out West to assist in fixing this ‘imbalance of power’.
Apart from the above gripe, GM involvement, commitment and activity is second to none in the BBS and the league only looks like getting stronger. With some great prospects ready to come in and dominate right away and boost activity more so including the likes of Paul, Bogut, Williams, Mayo, Oden, Durant and Roy, the BBS looks to be in safe hands and ready to continue well into the future.
