See if you guys like this one, I know I havent wrote in a while. But I thought this was a pretty cool idea.
The BBS All-Un-Sung Team[/u]
A look around the league at some of the most underrated players putting up big numbers for their teams.
C- Vitaly Potapenko (ORL) – Perhaps the league’s most unheralded player continues to impress as Potapenko leads the team in scoring (22.3) and rebounding (9.0). After splitting the previous five seasons with the Cavaliers and Jazz, the Magic still have this Wright State product locked for another three seasons.
PF- Jamie Feick (IND) - The sixth year big man out of Michigan State has given the Pacers consistent rebounding and scoring numbers while still playing strong defense in the middle. The 32 year old is in his contract year and should make his future employer whether it be Indiana or another team, very happy with his strong play next season.
SF- Toni Kukoc (PHI) – The 35 year old veteran from Yugoslavia has revived his career this season with the Sixers by posting career highs in points (21.5), rebounds (6.8) and assists (4.1). After spending three seasons in Sacramento before being traded to Indy, Kukoc seemed to have grown fond of playing along side forward Dirk Nowitski and the rest of the Philly offense.
SG- Allan Houston (NO) – Houston may not be the same player he used to be, but he can still light up the scoreboard from the perimeter. Houston is shooting over 47% from the field and even better from beyond the arc. The former Tennessee Volunteer is also a bargain this season for only $8 million.
PG- Jason Hart (PHI) – Many around the league believed Philly would not be the same force again after Starbury packed his bags to Milwaukee this past off-season. Maybe neither would have anticipated the rise of fourth year guard Jason Hart, as he is averaging over nine assists a game and with only 2.5 turnovers per game. The former Orangeman also averages over seven points a game and 1.4 steals for the Atlantic leading Sixers.
Honorable Mention Team:
C- Chris Mihm (POR) – The third year pro out of Texas, finally got his chance to start in Portland, where he currently leads the team in scoring (16.7), rebounding (8.1) and blocks (1.6). The seven footer remains on his rookie contract and still has room to grow at only 24 years old.
PF- Aaron Williams (PHO) – Similar to Feick, Williams went under the radar for five seasons and came off the bench for teams like the 76ers, Nets, and Timberwolves. Now as a starter, Williams remains one of the league leaders in rebounding (11.7) while still averaging nearly 2 blocks per game. Williams is still under contract for 2 more years for an economical 10 million in total.
SF- Walter Hermann (BOS) – The former second round pick from Argentina has caught on in Boston to become a consistent force for the Celtics. Hermann is another sharp shooter from outside and is ranked seventh in the league in free throw percentage (.911). The 24 year old, who signed with Boston this past off season, is signed for four years at 6 million per season.
SG- Raja Bell (MIL) – The undrafted free agent from Florida International signed with the Blazers this off-season before being dealt to the Bucks in a five player trade. Bell’s numbers are overlooked on a team headlined by Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Stephon Marbury. With his high shooting percentages and solid defense, Raja is great role player for any lineup.
PG- Nick Van Exel (DAL) – After breaking out with the Nuggets in 2000, Van Exel has had experience a rocky ride these last three seasons. As a Clipper in 2001, Van Exel backed up All-BBS guard Sam Cassell before being dealt next year to Dallas where he played in only 65 games. This season, has been night and day for Van Exel, as the 31 year old ranks third in assists per game while also having career high in points (18.0).
The BBS All-Over-Hyped Team
A look at some players that have hardly played to their billing since coming into the league.
C- Zach Randolph (POR) - Although Randolph still is only 21, he has changed addresses three times in three seasons. He may still have a chance to grow and be an All-BBS performer but this might not be that season. Randolph’s rebounding and defensive numbers are down on a team that is not very good this season, is also not great for his development.
PF- Udonis Haslem (CHI) – After trading for Haslem last season for the late season push, the forward from Florida has been pushed to the end of the bench this season. The Bulls third year player has only played in seven games and seems to not have the skills of back up former Slovenian lottery pick, Primoz Brezec. Haslem, 24, still has two years on his rookie contract with the Bulls.
SF- Peja Stockajovic (DAL) – The sharpshooter is being outscored by point guard Van Exel, and power forward Tony Battie in what seems to be another disappointing season for the Yugoslavian and the Mavs. Peja emerege in 2001 with Dallas after finishing the season averaging 20 points a game but has since slumped last season and this year.
SG- Ben Gordon (NJN) – The Pistons may have known something many other teams like the Nets did not know when considering Gordon in this past draft. Although selected fourth overall, the Nets acquired the former UConn guard in efforts to rebuild the team. However, Gordon has barely had an effect on the team this season averaging only 9 points a game and shooting only 40 percent from the field in over 33 minutes player a game.
PG- Jamaal Tinsley (MIL) – Tinsley like Randolph, has put on three different unis in their first three seasons in the league. And, it’s no secret why. Tinsley is still turning over the rock much more than his assist tallies and is a scorer by no means. At 25 years old, Tinsley is not a bad player but probably should not be platooning at the point guard spot with Starbury in Milwaukee.
The BBS All-Over-Paid Team
A look at some of the most overpaid players in the league not playing worth their salaries.
C Ervin Johnson (DEN) - 1 year, 13 million
PF- Andrei Kirilenko (SAC) - 7 years, 115 million
SF- Jerry Stackhouse (SAC) - 6 years, 93 million
SG- Richard Hamilton (SEA) - 6 years, 81 million
PG- Sam Cassell (SAC) - 4 years, 55 million
Honorable Mention Team:
C- Juwan Howard (NO) - 3 years, 26 million
PF- Raef LaFrentz (SAC) - 5 years, 54 million
SF- Bruce Bowen (MIA) - 1 year, 8 million
SG- Ray Allen (NYK) - 6 years, 107 million
PG- Jason Terry (MIA) 3 years, 25 million
