what's wrong with matthews, i mean i never actually looked at his numbers but didn't he have a career season and make the all-star team or whatever?

He is already 32, a career .249 hitter. Only thing he is good at is d for the most part. 10 million a year for that type of player is horrid. They think he will be a super leadoff hitter. We already have Figgins who is better overal.

The contract is more then Juan Pierre got from the Dodgers and he is 3 years older and career numbers flat out suck ass. Check it out, he Ks about double the amount he walks. Gets like 10 steals a year, thats so great.

Completely agree Lumley....avg. career with the exception of last year (contract year)...horrible contract for Matthews....should've dealt a few of the many prospects they have for a legit power hitter or just signed someone like Lee.

Yup. Miserable signing. He's not in the same bandbox, and has never done anything outside of last year. He'll probably be .260, 6 homers and an OPS in the 7s. Completely miserable signing.

I guess the Jays won't be dealing Wells to the Angels like it's been rumored.

GP Manny or Tejada is still suppose to come here in a deal thats why they claim we signed 2 guys we didnt really need to feel holes. I personally think the Angels did this to fuck with Rangers. The other thing is Matthews hit in Texas which inflates everyones numbers big time. Salmon career average I new there was like .460. I feel we could have got like Pierre who actually scares guys when he gets on base. Like Aaron said we should have just gave the money to a stud.

I'm happy to see Lum making sense. It's a miserable move. Essentially a great 1st half and an even better catch just got this career 5th outfielder a 5 year deal. Just goes to show how ridiculous the market is right now. 130+ for Soriano? 90 or 100 (both have been reported) for Carlos Lee? Damn, I can't wait until an actual star hits the market, to see what they'd get. 22+ million for Carlos Zambrano, anyone?

Still cheaper then Garys deal, plus Pierre hits around .300 year in and year out.

Still cheaper then Garys deal, plus Pierre hits around .300 year in and year out. Didn't he hit like .240 two seasons ago? Don't remember what he finished with this year, but he's not a .300 hitter. His contract was also a case of overpaying for speed. Plus, he's totally unnecessary in that lineup. I hate just about every signing made so far.

You do not pay 9 million a year to an aging outfielder with no power and who relies totally on his legs. Horrible.

Pierre at least scares you on the base pads, and is younger then Matthews. Matthews hit in Texas where everyone hits like a mother in Arlington.

Pierre is pretty durable, I don't think age is a factor with him like it is with other guys. They probably overpaid him but if he somehow reverted back to the player he was in his prime then it could be very well-worth it.
